 atomic number versus atomic radius... is there any link???

for example; Hydrogen (H) atomic number = 1

atomic radius =25

is there any link? i have a graph with atomic numbers and radius's and now it is telling me to describe and explain!!!!

aaaarrrrggggghhhhh

there are a lot of factors, but there are trends associated with the periodic table and atomic radius (of atoms in the ground state).

Atomic radius tends to decrease going across a row, and increase going down a column. Be careful though, you can't compare diagonally.

As you increase the positive charge in the nucleus, the electrons are pulled in more causing the radius to decrease. But this is more than offset by electronic shielding when a new shell is formed.

Try and see the pattern that emerges, although sub shells confuses things a bit I think.
