90% Hno3

Featured Replies

I need to know if 90% nitric acid will dessolve my aluminum tubing. Does anyone have any experanice with strong HNO3 ?

Im not sure if it applies to HNO3, but in a 37% HCl solution, aluminum (Al Foil) reacts rather violently, producing H2 gas.

Thats a good idea to test for short time exporsure. Butt, It whon't tell what long time contact with this acid will do.

the oxide layer on aluminium will stop it attacking the aluminium. This won't last forever and then it will react. why can't you use pyrex or something.

The HNO3 will attack the tubing, albeit slowly. But in the long run it will be eaten, and I would certainly not use 90% HNO3 in aluminium apparatus.

Thank you for the input people. I have a lot of (AL) tubing but I will get some pyrex equipment. It is not worth the risk of having a mishap with this dangerous subtance.

Mishaps with nitric acid are very easy to occur. Be careful about breathing the acid fumes; if you can smell it, you have already inhaled too much.
