Effects of electricity on plants

I have decided to Create an experiment to test the results of a Hydroponic growing system with the introduction of an Electromagnetic Field. Doing my research I have learned that plants and there cells have certain level of electric charge. Also I have learned that the introduction of an electric pulse implemented in the soil improved the growth of plants and increased the size of fruits and vegetables. I have always wondered what effect a free floating electricity enriched environment would have on the plants. This is a simple experiment using a fish tank as a hydroponic apparatus and a verity of different plants and a simple way of making an electric field with metal plates and a car battery.

I'm am not sure what frequency at which to set the field as not to harm the plants and but to produce results in any matter. using a volt regulator and the formula E=V/D I am able to control the magnetism. I only wish to ask for some advise or any comments as to what the frequency should be?
