whats invoved in applying to a grad school? specifically for physics.

Really, your current school should be helping you out here.

I don't think you Americans have an equilivant to UCAS so your best bet is to write to the school in question, expresssing your interest and requesting a prospectus and application form.

Taking the GREs (general and probably subject), filling out forms, sending in transcripts, arranging to have letters of recommendations sent in, hounding people to send in the letters that were promised in such a way that they don't write a bad rec. Visiting the school, talking to professors and students.

The requirements should be on the prospective school's website. In the days before the internet, there were large books in the library that listed all that information, including the person to whom you should send the application; usually the department head. All that info should be online now. I'd take it as a bad sign if grad schools haven't joined the rest of us in the 21st century.

A lot of schools haven't really figured out the internet thing. My schools website still has a copyright 2004, not a bad thing.. but the library hours are for last semester...

Anyways, I suggest you look at their website, email them, and wait for a reply. If they don't reply within a week, reply to someone higher than them, or in the same department; math, chemistry, physics. Even a student commission or something, if everyone else is jacking around.

That way you can have someone get ahold of someone else for you.

I sometimes find tons of mistakes on niu.edu so I just message the webmaster or some other staff and have them direct the mail for me.

I emailed Kevin Warwick a couple of times before, so I know that these people can't be that busy at other colleges.
