Experiment against fungus and insects ? [botany]

Featured Replies

Good day.

I was reading about a "Bordeaux mixture" for prevention of fungus and damaging insects for plants and trees.  It is a simple water solution to spray hydrated lime + liquid soap,  supposed to not deterr/harm pollinators if applied before blooming.

What is your opinion instead of spraying such mixture; spraying only the liquid soap onto foliage and branches to make a sticky layer and dusting windward with the hydrated lime powder after with the hope of hydrated lime sticking better to the plants (until next rain ?)  -Or, a better approach you may have heard of- ?

That's not Bordeaux Mixture. The key ingredient in Bx Mixture is copper, in the form of copper sulphate. As far as I know it is a fungicide. I have not heard of it being used as an  insecticide. https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/agricultural-and-biological-sciences/bordeaux-mixture

Thank you sir.   I remember reading in several places about insecticidal properties.  Being correct or not = ?

With the typical imprecisions of naming different products the same and naming same products differently...  One of them is

Fair enough. But your proposed idea of applying just lime powder will not be fungicidal. You need the Cu for that which, as I say, is the key ingredient in Bx mixture for its intended application, in vineyards.

Oh!! "Lime" as in calcium. I was thinking "lime" as in citrus (usually it's orange blossom in cleaners). :embarass:

Yes I think it is slaked lime Ca(OH)₂ that  is used in Bx mixture.
