  Electrolysis is the passing of electric current through a liquid medium to dissociate it to it individual components such as 

Nacl + H20 + current = naoh+HCl 

Sodium chloride+ water + current = sodium hydroxide + hydrochloric acid 

 

That is a poor explanation.
