Burn some magnesium metal in a pure CO2 atmosphere, you get pure C and MgO. As a secundary side reaction you may also get some magnesium carbide.

 

This separates the C, but not the O.

is there any way to do it with just electricty, like when you break down water with electrolysis?

nope.

Use a plant. Cover it up in a dark place. Let it respirate. After a while, you get O2 and the plant material is mostly carbon.

hmmm............... i wonder how the plant does it................

pretty much the same was as we, or any other organism does it.

The only difference is that we have to eat food, and plants make it themselves.
