GIF's are supported by all modern browsers, but support limited color palettes and one-channel transparency. PNG's, on the other hand, support alpha-channel (24-layer) transparency and a full complement or colors, but are not fully supported by MSIE without a CSS hack used in conjunction with a JavaScript or a PHP script.
