Here is an interesting fact about "regression" (assuming you mean the mathematical method fitting data). Sir Francis Galton (1822 - 1911) noticed that the children of parents with above or below average height tended to be closer to average height. He referred to this phenomenon as "regression towards mediocrity." He then developed mathematical tools to analyse these tendencies. This came to be known as regression analysis.
