Conservation of mass/energy and hydrogen atom.

Featured Replies

Hello,

While reading about the subject I made this simple calculation (I will detail it so to be sure there is no mistake) :

Mass of electron (at rest) is : me = 9,11E(-31) kg = 5,48795181E-04 amu

Masse of proton : mp = 1,67252000E-27 kg = 1,00754217 amu

sum of both (electron mass being 1000 time smaller) : me+mp = 1,00809096 amu

atomic weight of hydrogen (precisely the isotope 1H) (https://chemistry.sciences.ncsu.edu/msf/pdf/IsotopicMass_NaturalAbundance.pdf), is : M(H) = 1.007825 amu.

The difference of masses is D = (me+mp)-M(H) = 0,000265963855422 amu

Since :

c= 2,99792458E+08 m/s,

1ev = 1,60200000E-19 J

Calculating the atomic equivalente to 1 amu we have :

Ue (1 amu)= 1 amu * c² = (1,66000000E-27) [kg] (2,99792458E+08)^2 [m/s]^2= 1,49193360E-10 [J] = 9,31294380E+08 [eV] = 9,31294380E+02 [MeV] = 931,3 MeV.

The equivalent in atomic energy of this difference (D) of masse is :

Ue(D) = 0,000265963855422 * 931,3 MeV = 0,25 MeV.

If my calculations are correct, this mass difference should be used to bond the two components of the atom (no neutron to «stic» in the nucleus). Meanwhile the energy necessary to «break» the atom in ions - and have thus seperated electron and proton - is 10000 times smaller (only 14 ev).

How to exmplain this incoherence ? Of course, the two types of energy are diffirent (electric & atomic), but it doesn’t resolve the question of energy conservation.

Remarque : I am mere sciences amateur, so be kind and indulgent of my ignorance for what will seem elementairy to experts.

Thank you.
