I will be getting a laptop or PPC in the near future I will be getting one with capeable of connecting to a wireless LAN.

 

I will be using this device both at school and at home. Thing is neither has a wireless network. So what I want is a device that I can use as a wireless access point connected to a router via an ethernet cable or usb cable to one of the computers on the network that will connct to my laptop r PPC.

 

Is there a setup/device that would allow this?

All you need is a WLAN capable router.

I wah hopeing that I could use a usb or ethernet access point because they are cheaper from what I understand.

Then why do you have to ask if you already know what you need?
