Does Genetic Engineering strictly count as engineering?

Featured Replies

Yes, in that it's an application of purely scientific/theoretical knowledge for practical ends. Much like building a chemical factory is chemical engineering.

I'd say it certainly is. "Engineer - The application of scientific and mathematical principles to practical ends such as the design, manufacture, and operation of efficient and economical structures, machines, processes, and systems." dictionary.com

According to this definition, genetic engineering fits right in. We are creating species with superior genetic systems, with a practicle side effect.

Engineering is a general but well defined methodology for building or developing something physical. It goes far beyond guys in hard hats laying brick and putting steel pipes together.
