hey i am writing up my prac on the preparation of aspirin, and just can't seem to find any information on what the "published" or "accepted" yield is. In my experimetn i got 86% (which i think is a little high).

I'm not familiar with the preparation of aspirin. If it dosn't involve equilibriums and similar, your best bet is just to calculate the theoretical possible yield and compare yours to it.

yeah i have done that, but i was thinking that there would be a value for the yield that is got when it is done in industry or something like that...?

Maybe try emailing the companies, they could possibly help. I have no idea what the industry standard is.

out of curiosity, what precursor did you use, and what did you do to obtain your final product?

what was the base chemical you started with in your synthesis?

for aspirin it was salicylic acid and for paracetamol 4-aminophenol

so basically you esterfied the salicylic acid with ethanoic acid and you formed the amide of para-aminophenol with ethanoic acid. what catalysts did you use?

catalyst, ummm H2SO4 and acetic anhydride

how conc was the H2SO4?

dunno only used 6 drops of H2SO4

but i think it was fairly strong

Lol, we did this lab at teh start of this semester for my organic chem class (aspirin not paracetamol)
