Featured Replies

hey i am writing up my prac on the preparation of aspirin, and just can't seem to find any information on what the "published" or "accepted" yield is. In my experimetn i got 86% (which i think is a little high).

Cheers

oh yeah, i meant to ask...

where can i find this kind of information? (or this specific piece of information?)

oh and likewise for paracetamol (if anyone knows where this kind of info. exists )

?

:)

I'm not familiar with the preparation of aspirin. If it dosn't involve equilibriums and similar, your best bet is just to calculate the theoretical possible yield and compare yours to it.

yeah i have done that, but i was thinking that there would be a value for the yield that is got when it is done in industry or something like that...?

thanks for replying btw :)

Maybe try emailing the companies, they could possibly help. I have no idea what the industry standard is.

If you have access look up journals online, eg. journal of the american chemical society.

for aspirin it was salicylic acid and for paracetamol 4-aminophenol

so basically you esterfied the salicylic acid with ethanoic acid and you formed the amide of para-aminophenol with ethanoic acid. what catalysts did you use?

Lol, we did this lab at teh start of this semester for my organic chem class (aspirin not paracetamol)
