What did companies use to call their IT depts. in 70s

Featured Replies

I'm a translator and I have a text which I'm translating into English in which someone is mentioning an obviously outdated term for a computer department in a company, so I need something equally outdated (if there is such a thing) in English. This is from the 70s.

I guess most companies refer to such a dept. as their IT dept. nowdays, but was there some different term in the 70s (or older)?

I worked for the European Space Agency in the 70s. We had a Computer Department and a Data Processing Department. The Computer Dept would now be called IT.

Thanks!

So this would have been in the UK? I'm thinking about whether maybe there could have been different terms in the UK and US.

Actually, it was in Germany, but English was the official language. Being computer-orientated, even the Germans spoke English amongst themselves when chatting about work. IBM machines.
