  1. Evolution is a scietifically proven fact. It has nothing to do with religion. Schools are supposed to be secular. ID is a theory that has been put forward to appease those people who want to believe that God is the Creator, but who conceed that the enormous weight of scientific evidence suggests that a literal interpretation of Genesis is flawed. edit: Should we also teach kids that there is a possibility that the Flying Spaghetti is the creator?
  2. The Sydney Morning Herald (and I believe the New York Times) reported today that President Bush wants the Intelligent Design theory taught in schools, along with evolution:
  3. My theory: "sciency people" are generally more intelligent than the rest of the population.
  4. Absolutely correct. Magnetite is formed in high temperature, hydrothermal systems. These systems often contain gold and other valuable metals such as tin, tungsten, moly and PGE's. When gold panning in a creek or stream, often the last phase of the process is removing the residual magnetite with a magnet to hopefully leave your gold nuggets!
  5. Yes, I was certainly talking about the co-ordinates. If you look at my score you would realise that I certainly don't think being conservative is a "positive" thing.
  6. No.... thats completely different.....it has to do with the lattice energy of the solid.
  7. And worst of all is drunk and tired!!!!
  8. Don't mean to nitpick, but that statement is oxymoronic.....
  9. Calcium tungstate (scheelite) and calcium molybdate (powellite) are classics when it comes to fluorescence (sp?). Many natural fluorites (CaF2) are also fluorescent and give brilliant colours under UV light. The most famous fluorescent mineral locality in the world is Franklin, New Jersey, and anyone interest in fluorescence should take a look at the pictures on this page and also this page for a start.
  10. For example...........???? It could be for many reasons, kinetic differences, thermodynamic restraints, steric hinderance.....
  11. Economic Left/Right: -6.00 Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -3.38 Puts me right in line with Gandhi An initial look at the results posted so far shows what everybody should expect, that the results for people from the USA are generally more positive than for the rest of the world. It is by no means conclusive though.......
  12. He was an electrician.......make of that what you will........
  13. I reckon Thallium would be a good name for a band....don't know why!
  14. Did I miss something????...... I'm doing a PhD in chemistry and I've never heard of the element anthanium, or is it a different name for another common element?
  15. I agree that that you have to be very careful with the way you use the word terrorist: Both of the initial definitions given by Pangloss and In My Memory could equally applied to the "good guys" throughout the 20th Century. I think that under the first definition the invasion of Iraq could be termed violence for the purpose of achieving a political, ideological and (in my opinion, a religious) goals, and further more, the allies would be considered terrorists using the second definition for bombing the town of Dresden during WW2. (Just a note, I am not suggesting the London bomber's are not terrorists)
  16. Yep....The Bush administration is terrible tough on businesses....... and the best friend of low income earners and/or the disadvantaged.
  17. Christianity is an easy target on a science forum.
  18. For all intents and purposes, it's inert.
  19. Interestingly, the dots still disappear even when you are only looking at the cross with one eye.
  20. The US calls them enemy combatants, and not PoWs because of the afore mentioned problem. The Geneva Conventions protects POWs from criminal prosecution for acts of violence committed on the battlefield against enemy combatants, and provides legal protections for POWs accused of crimes. This would be devastating for the Bush administration's policies and the detainees are therefore not called PoWs. For more information have a look at this site.
  21. You will get yourself into a world of trouble if you go down this path. The USA purposely made sure that these people were not granted PoW status, as they would then be protected under the Geneva Convention. PoW status would've given the detainee rights the US does not want them to have. PoWs must also be released upon the conclusion of the war, which I certainly don't see happening. Under the convention they are also protected from humiliating and degrading behaviour, and must be protected against acts of "violence or intimidation", and against “insults and public curiosity” (Article 13). This is certainly inimical with the USA's objectives. I think you meant charged, not convicted, and this is the important point. This person has been charged with an offence, and is therefore reasonably able to defend themselves against the charge. Only 3 out of around 500 detainees at Guant. Bay have been charged with an offence, the others are held in limbo. What terrorist? I believe that in the supposedly civilised USA you uphold the concept of "innocent until proven guilty". The only reason you think they are terrorists is that your president has told you so, and he is a proven liar. These people have not been charged with an offense, have not had a free and fair trail, and have not been convicted of anything. Until that time they are assumed innocent!! In fact, some of these people have already been released after being held for no reason at all!! The rights of an American shouldn't be any different to the rights of an Arab just because the USA has more money and military power. Even Timothy McVeigh, an American citizen and a convicted terrorist, was a) charged with a crime, b) given a free and fair trial, and c) was given the right to defend himself. The illegally held detainees have no such rights. Remind me which 4 countries execute the most people in the world, I'll give you a clue the other three are China, Iran and Vietnam...... I'm sure you'll be a touch more interested when some people turn that hate into violence and start doing thing like...oh I don't know.....flying fully loaded passenger planes into two of the tallest buildings in the world!!!! Absolutely true.
