  1. In post No. 11 this was the quote: Then in post No. 20: Which is it? Are they the fastest growing emitter or are they the biggest emitter? Your own source seems to indicate that your first comment is ambiguous at best, or plain wrong at worst. Even assuming a 30% growth in emisssions, the USA still is the biggest emitter of GHG's, both in total and per capita.
  2. I know this will be a mighty unpopular view, especially amongst Americans, but I never agreed with the concept of putting (lethally) armed air marshalls on planes to begin with. If these guys had not been on the plane, not only would the plane not of been blown up, the poor man would still be alive.
  3. I've done a fair bit of work with mercury compounds of various kinds, and to this date I've not come across a non-toxic variety.
  4. Over-reactions like this stemming from the abundance of misplaced patrioitism in the USA are a potential reason why the US edition had a different story/picture. On an issue related to the article: Some right wing people really disgust me. The author of this article is having a go at people who consider health care a right, as though we are some sort of sick commie degenerates. In most other countries in the developed world, health care is considered important enough to be provided equally to all citizens, not just those who can afford it. It is the USA which is dysfunctional, not the rest of the world!!
  5. Basic copper carbonate is light BLUE, not green, when not well crystalline. The amorphous variety of this compound is found in nature and is known as georgeite, will the crystalline variety is the extremely common mineral malachite (which is green).
  6. You simply need to think a little more laterally, your results indicate that the concentration of the acid is lower than that of the base. What size aliquot did you use for each titration? The only time you will get an exactly equal volume of titrant for both the acid and the base is when there is a 1:1 molar ratio (concentration) of these components.
  7. This is quite true, I was assuming an approximate 1:1 molar ratio though
  8. This is an acid base neutralisation reaction. The baking soda (aka sodium bicarbonate, NaHCO3) is the base and the vinegar (aka acetic acid, CH3COOH) is obviously the acid. The two react to form a salt, water, and carbon dioxide: NaHCO3 + CH3COOH ----> CH3COO-Na+ + H2O + CO2 The resulting solution will in fact be basic rather than acidic as the CH3COO- ion is a medium strength base.
  9. sigh...... God didn't shatter the glass!!!!
  10. You've missed the point slightly, the matter that the earth was originally formed from contained a very high content of pure iron an nickel, much the same as many of the stoney meteorites that fall to earth these days do.
  11. Think about the arrangement of bonding and non-bonding electron pairs around the central atoms. Are there any non-bonding pairs left over? is this responsible for the dipole?
  12. tick, tick, tick...... and the American midwest slowly advances towards a state ruled by rediculous religious fundamentalist ideals......
  13. My opinion of rampant capitalism just got a little bit worse!
  14. Any nominee who gets the conservatives' knickers in a knot is a good candidate in my opinion!!!
  15. My thoughts exactly, Bush is not really a proliferator of peace, so I don't think being anti-Bush should exclude a person from getting the Nobel peace prize.
  16. According to my calcs, the actual value is 4.956 km/L. Maybe I'm using the wrong conversion factors: 1 mile = 1.61 kilometres 1 gallon = 4.546 Litres * realises mistake * I was using the imperial gallon instead of the US gallon. The actual conversion factor should be 3.785 litres to the gallon. *mutters about the stupidity of the imperial (inferior) system *
  17. *Does quick calculation* *Gets a shock* That's only 5 Km per litre!!! I do around 800 Km a week, in that car it would be equivalent to 160 Litres / week. At todays prices that would equate to $212 per week (or a third of my total income)!!!! No wonder the sales are dropping. BTW I also drive a 4WD, but it get the eqivalent of 30 mpg!!!
  18. You won't find many true-blue Aussies who don't like vegemite!!! Marmite, on the other hand, is far too salty for my liking.
  19. Unfortunately, this type of thing will be happening again and again in years to come (especially in the USA), with intelligent people having to defend something they shouldn't have to defend!!!
  20. Putting a charge on a molecule makes it highly polar (ie large positive and negative charges). Water itself is highly polar and therefore will dissolve other polar compounds readily. Yes, for example benzoic acid (C6H5COOH) is only sparingly soluble in water, but addition of sodium hydroxide (the base) forms the benzoate ion (C6H5COO-) which is highly soluble in water. No, in this case you would add an acid. I don't believe there is a relationship, however I stand to be corrected. Yes, each ion or molecule becomes "hydrated" or surrounded by a number of water molecules; electrostatic polar forces keep them apart.
  21. Sorry, you are quite correct, I forgot the "log" in the equation. I use the Henderson-Hasselbach equation all the time for calculating the pH of buffer solutions, so its not a mistake I should make!
