  1. He may be right. The only reality is just the physical here and now. The previous states do not exist anymore. Its not like there is some sort of "cosmic cache" which stores all the states somewhere. I know, I know. Conservation of information... But there could be multiple histories that would create the 'curent state.' Well, I dont know where I'm going with this
  2. Yes, but some people do consider it important
  3. Anybody want to fill me in? Is it supposed to be like Me r squared (meaning nerd). Then Why...M ??
  4. Good, got it working! The first time I tried to install Linux it never asked for the 3rd CD, and as you can imagine, didn't work. But I was persistent and it worked the second. Although it may be a while before I'm used to it, the layout is much better then XP. I just have one little question though: where can I find my old F drive? I fixed my above problem by simple using the installer for partitions. It erased my newly installed windows OS but I dont think I want it anyway. The restore CD for emachines isn't as great as a real XP CD and will probably never notice the partitions. I do have a 6G slot for it though. I'll probably add some other Linux OS instead of XP. Anyway, thanks for all your help. A sufficiently bad situation turned into a very 'bright' outcome
  5. Yeah, but there could be other explanations. In string theory, inflation would have started out from a plank sized mass. Basically a thermal fluctuation would eventually make 3 dimensions larger then the rest and these three would be more likely for strings to cancel out and produce unwounded strings as energy which would fuel growth even more. Most strings would eventually 'fall' off but ti is possible for some to have not canceled , even if it be just one in the entire cosmos. edit: I stand corrected by the above post Yeah, but that's how string theory explains 3 larger dimensions along with inflation. I always thought that was how the idea of a cosmic string was produced though... oh wll.
  6. I already “know,” to an extent, C++. I’ve written some applications for ms dos in the past but I’ve never been very good with actual windows programming. I have ethernet running between two computers down here (my basement) and a wireless router connects an older win98 upstairs. And now that I think of it, the new router was installed using this computer. Oh, now I understand, thanks.
  7. I debated with several distros. Behave Linux caught my eye but I eventally decided on Fedora. College linux actually looked pretty cool though, I think I'm going to play around with it a bit in the neer future. As far as installing my first version of linux, I have one comment/question: I dont have any partisions but made references to F and I think the explinations above used the premise of me having two partitions (C and F). F is actallu another physical hardrive. If I tell windows to partition half the hardrive, is it going to erase everything of F as well? Or when I tell Linux to take the rest available space is it going to overite F? I dont think it will but I just have too much data on it to not be certain. Thanks.
  8. I dont have a labtop though...Just two emachines running a celeron. Thanks for all your help. I'm downloading the ISOs as we speak. I can't wait till my computer is good, and new, and Linuxy Too bad I've never install Linux before this! I remember attempting it along time ago with an open source forum that put together their own distribution (I forget the site but it was recommended by a friend who's big into Linux...apparentally he wanted me to test it or something). I'll probably take up C++ again but with Linux instead of Windows. Do you guys recommend any books? Not Linux programming but just the OS itself.
  9. One question: Should I format before installing XP? Or does it do that automatically (which is why linux comes second)? I sometimes have WinMX or Shareaza running but not very often. 512mg of RAM and I’m mot sure how much virtual memory I have.
  10. Cool, thanks. Go back didnt work (couldnt find valid restore time). This computer also has a little problem with Windows Task Manager and several other things including some specific software issues. I guess I’m going to copy any files on C to F (probably just my documents) then completely reinstall windows. Can I install Linux and Windows on the same hardrive? F is just sortof where I put all my stuff. It’s very organized w/o all the other folders on the drive. And is there any website dedicated to new linux users? (I’ll probably google some but you may already know of some great sites) The reason I havnt reinstalled Windows is because of the hassle of reinstalling all of my software. Hopefully I can find similar application for Linux and just use windows for windows specific stuff. Its just that it seems like I spent along time/ trial and error getting all the “best and coolest” windows stuff, if you know what I mean, and I don’t want to spend along time searching through the Linux equivalent of Media Player, Internet Explorer, etc.
  11. Yes, you're right Molotov. The history of a photon (or any particle for that manner) is a path in spacetime with ever increasing entropy (conservation of information). If the future spacetime path of a particle curves to a point then these spacetime paths will converge and intersect at that point. If this were to happen in the past, such that the spacetime paths emerge from the point of intersection and gradually curve away from each other, the point of intersection would appear to constitute the beginning of spacetime. If it were to happen in the future, such that the spacetime paths emerge to a point and thus gradually curve toward eachother, the point of intersecatin would appear to be the end of spacetime.
  12. I dont think any of the files I'm concerned abotu would be deleated. I dont want to go that rout simple because I've had this problem for like, probably a year now. I figure I could restore to a few hours ago before it escalated so I could check into the photohop fix. Of course I forgot the holly grail of computer fixes: reboot! I logged back in and havnt realized till now that my "computer crash event" didnt constitute a reboot. So I'll reboot then if that doesnt work (probably wont) I'll restart again but stop at the go back screen. Maybe photoshop has been causing this problem all along. PS: I tried installing linux before on F as a dual boot thing. I got a link to one OS and sourceforge just sent me to a directory of a bunch of files. I couldnt figure out how to install it though.
  13. I cant believe I forgot about this: Windows itself crashed just before this problem. For some reason all my applications started closing, wordperfect asked to save, firefox notified me of multiple tab closings etc. I was working on something at the time and fearing that it was trying to reboot I loged off then back in. It acted a litle wird until I get a message similar to: Windows has recovered from a fatale system failure. It said a log has been made, I clicked close, the same message popped up again, hit close, and everything was fine until I noticed my computer would restart explorer. As this guy puts it: http://groups-beta.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsxp.general/browse_thread/thread/26f15a281d7da99f/5893112d934f305c?q=Faulting+application+explorer.exe,+version+6.0.2800.1106,+faulting+module+ntdll.dll,+version+5.1.2600.1106&_done=%2Fgroups%3Fhl%3Den%26lr%3D%26ie%3DUTF-8%26oe%3DUTF-8%26q%3DFaulting+application+explorer.exe,+version+6.0.2800.1106,+faulting+module+ntdll.dll,+version+5.1.2600.1106%26sa%3DN%26tab%3Dwg%26&_doneTitle=Back+to+Search&&d#5893112d934f305c Aparentally this isnt a rare problem because lots of people seem to have it. I noticed Photoshop associate with the problem and have realized that I attempted to install it on my F drive a long time ago unsuccessfully. (It wanted to be on the c drive I guess: I was supposed to do something in my documents after the exe to install it but my problem was that I attempted to get it on F. I gave up and thought nothing more about it.) It is possible that just after photoshop the original problem started. Ironically, I cannot go in and manually look for the install log. Maybe I can look for my error log though and do a specific google for it. Anybody know how I can access the log?
  14. I do have go back running. The problem is that a couple dLoads finally completed. Would they get deleted? (These were ‘harmless’ files; not exe, archives, etc) I also, just after the problem escalated, installed neptun to run pcpitstop. But I was hopping to actually fix the problem because the same thing has been happening for a very long time and only recently has it gotten worse. The first time I had this problem was viewing a file. I did some experimenting and found that it only did this when I clicked on certain files (it would load the preview in the corner). Now it does the exact same thing except it does it anytime I start my computer. So, no, I didnt install any new software nor service packs. (Actually, big fix hasnt given me any updates for a while)
  15. This used to happen in the past only when viewing the ‘details’ of certain video files. I used to get "Windows Explorer has encountered an error and needs to close..." but later all the explorer functions would just restart with out the friendly little error message. I guess I shouldnt have let this error go unoticed for so long but I’ve just been assuming that it had something to do with not having the ‘proper encodings’ to view the file.[sense I never use media player – VLC and BSPlayer] (I realize that the 'quick view' in the corner is obtained from the file itself as a template so my comp. is not just 'viewing the first frame') Now, explorer cashes and restarts any time I try to view any folder with windows explorer of my computer. I’ve found a couple links: http://64.233.161.104/search?q=cache:Y3l6aydAixEJ:www.tek-tips.com/viewthread.cfm%3Fqid%3D483074+%22my+computer%22+problem+crashes+%22start+menu%22+xp+%22explorer+crashes%22&hl=en http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;320563 Aparentally I need to remove Kodak. My dad does use this computer for pictures so I wouldnt dobt this explanation. However, Control Pannel is viewd with the application that crashes explorer so I cannot get to add/remove programs. 1) Could there be another reason to constitute this problem? 2) How can I reach Add or Remove Programs? Edit: I just found out that my dad does not use Kodak. He knows what the software is and doesnt use it. So forget 2, I need another cause for the error to attempt to fix it. Note: I use an emachines XP with a celoron.
  16. I think it's been long accepted that Mars used to have watter. There have been similar 'findings' in the past.
  17. There probably are actually more Christian heavy metal singers then atheists. It just seems that atheist musicians are more likely to be a rock/pop/metal group then folk, punk, classical, or other. This of course assumes the premise that the site contains almost all atheistic bands. And of course that the majority in the predominate section are "head banging" metal and not just pop, but that seems like a reasonable observation in itself (from what I’ve clicked).
  18. Shouldnt the universe have a diameter of 15 billion or so light years?
  19. That is just one of a number of factors leading toward one developing homosexuality. The geneticist (also responsible for the “god gean”) found certain DNA strands that were more likely to be found in somebody that was gay then somebody that wasn’t. All this says is that certain geans may make people more prone to be homosexual (same case with spirituality).
  20. The electromagnetic spectrum goes smaller then a hydrogen nucleolus. This is why we can “see” atoms. I know it used to be taught that we would never be able to see them, and indeed we cant in our normal color range, but this is one of the cases where scientific ‘fact’ is later discovered false. Although I’m not positive (not big on quantum field theory), depending on the model, point particles can get much ‘smaller’ then the quark. I may be wrong so I’ll probably google a bit to find the answer.
  21. It seems that there are more atheist heavy metal bands then anything else: http://www.telemark.net/atheistmusic/toc.dbm I think the whole idea of lumping music as causing bad behavior is as absurd as saying the same for video games. I can see one's vocabulary being effected by music but that's about it. I'm sure there are studies that say positively abotu people who listen to music as opposed to people who dont. I'd like to see some real, hard, cold, data that says heavy metal is 'bad for our youth.' Until then tell the fundy's on that forum that the burden of proof rests on their shoulders; they hate it when people say that!
  22. The problem I see with the above reasoning is that only the mass of the black hole restricts light from leaving because it curvs space time. The big thing is that as it aproaches the spead of/faster then light, time slows down to a hault
  23. I dont think so...? I'm pretty sure that it's impossible to receive data if you're not the intended recipicant. At the end you recieve the data, but along the way, unless you can trick into receiving the data yourself, any attempts to gain it would result in 'partial' forms of information. Quanumt enrcyption is not like a regular message with half the amount of information required.
