  1. I'm afraid I asked a string of questions that I can't answer. The key question that I asked is the last one "Did we invent Him or did He invent us? "
  2. Sorry about it all you UK Dads - but I'm number 1 today! (according to my socks)
  3. I must admit that I find gravity quite attractive. I believe her it to be quite attracted to me.
  4. I have an uncomfortable thought that goes along these lines:-(But note I am just expressing my own thoughts) Life started on this planet in very different conditions than exist today. If our species was suddenly presented with those conditions we could not survive. Life continued on the planet purely because the conditions here changed so slowly that evolution allowed life forms to change in order to cope with those changes. Any life form that could not adapt to the very slowly changing conditions was doomed. I fear that we may be changing conditions on the earth's surface and in the earth's atmosphere so rapidly that human life may become untenable. I think I am far from alone in this thought, but are we doing too little too late?
  5. Google is deploying spy planes that can show you sunbathing in your garden. They will be able to show things 4 inches wide. That doesn't worry me although 4 inches long might! http://www.dailymail...ing-garden.html
  6. For the record I have apologised and I did not mark him down.
  7. Sorry, I thought the comment implied that attitudes were still the same today. My apologies.
  8. As an ex-member of the British Armed Services I would be interested where you got these "facts" from. Any armed person in the British Forces is governed by Rules of Engagement. These are changed according to circumstance and not published as it's not in the interest's of our Forces for any enemy to know when lethal firepower might be allowed.(And when it may not). But basically, by the time lethal firepower is allowed you are under fire yourself or definite threat of coming under fire. I cannot imagine someone deliberately aiming to miss the enemy under these circumstances. I must admit that I was fortunate in never actually having to be in that position.
  9. I am quite elderly now, but have had more experience with people of different races than most. I therefore feel my opinion is worth considering. In my time I have worked under, with, and over people of several different nationalities - a lot of the time in a teaching role. If you put two people side by side there is no denying that there are differences that are visible and invisible due to their genetic heritage. One of those differences will be intelligence. However, for any difference you chose there will be a wide range and I have found that these ranges are so wide and the overlap so great that I doubt that the average intelligence, as demonstrated to me, is much different for any chosen group. Because my experience has been mostly teaching technical matters all my foreign students were well educated before coming into my hands. This raises another question in my mind. What do we mean by intelligence? IMO if the only reason for lack of knowledge is lack of education then that does not prove lack of intelligence. If the ability to learn was always there that person was always intelligent. If there is a genetic link to that ability then it will be passed on in the usual way. Don't assume a person is not intelligent just because the life he has led results in a lack of knowledge!
  10. Just to say I'm pleased to be your friend - I think we may have a lot in common.

  11. I'm basically with rigney on this one.I have said elsewhere on the forum that since believers cannot prove the existence of God and non-believers cannot prove he does not exist we are all somewhere on a scale between the two extremes ( although we may feel that we are very close to one end or the other). I am close to the atheist end but far enough away to say I'm not certain whether I should say I'm agnostic. If I am in a gathering of people who are praying I will at least bow my head and give thought to the object of the prayers. I have also said that if I die and find myself somewhere else I'll accept it as some sort of bonus! (Just hope I don't find myself saying "Bl**dy Hell, it's hot in here!" ) For rigney:- Now troubles are many, they're as deep as a well. I can swear there ain't no heaven but I pray there ain't no hell. Swear there ain't no heaven and I pray there ain't no hell, But I'll never know by living, only my dying will tell. Yes only my dying will tell. Yeah, only my dying will tell. http://lyricsplayground.com/alpha/songs/a/andwhenidie.shtml
  12. I must admit that I like an automatic gearbox on my car!
  13. Surely, if female sex pheromones exist and are acting in the way nature intended they should make you feel more masculine? I thought they were believed to arouse, or at least increase the interest of, males in the vicinity. (and believed to be more effective around the time of ovulation)
  14. Does God die with the last human being? If not, what will he do? Will he do a better "job" of maintaining the earth without us? If he does die what will have been the purpose of His existence? Did we invent Him or did He invent us?
  15. I haven't read the book but have read reviews etc. Apparently it caused a sensation when first published, but deeper investigation throws doubt about it. "Most scientists today are satisfied that everything Virginia Tighe said can be explained as a memory of her long-forgotten childhood." http://en.wikipedia....i/Bridey_Murphy However, as Shakespeare said "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy. "! I believe Queen were not too well received your side of the Atlantic, but were much bigger in the UK. Iv'e put a couple of songs on "What are you listening to right now"
  16. This song takes me back to when I was 20 years old, between girl friends and owner of a motorbike. Who isn't a pretender?
  17. The robins in my front garden have flown the nest. I can now think of braving the spines of the untidy acacia bush which easily penetrate leather gloves!

I have been thinking of a reply using the phrase "a big prick", but thought better of it :-D

Actually on the basis of "learn a little every day" you made me wonder about dinosaur mating habits which I find is quite a mystery. http://dinosaurs.about.com/od/dailylifeofadinosaur/a/dinomating.htm

Nice link. Be careful of those pricks, Mr J.

  18. Many people wonder this, and if not what is life all about?
  19. First thoughts - what about where the rails join together and deliberate breaks such as points?
  20. Oh dear, I guess we have wandered away from the topic - sorry. We seem to have gone from Thanksgiving, to the war of Independence, to war between the US and GB, wars in general and the attitudes of people towards governments and war as expressed in words and music. I suppose that's what you are saying and I can't argue with that! People get carried away (or at least I do). My only excuse is that its been interesting.
  21. Even if we assume that Hitler, by God's rules and grace, now happily resides in Heaven, he was given just as an example of an evil person. Just delete his name from my post and consider its application to any truly evil person. You do raise other questions though. Can any person be so evil that God would not accept him/her even under the conditions you state? What happens to people who do evil deeds when mad and in their madness cannot profess faith and ask for forgiveness?
  22. Here is something that puzzles me about the innocence of very young people. If someone had killed an evil person such as Adolf Hitler when he/she was a child would he/she have gone to heaven? I assume that if they have some sort of existence now it's in Hell. I know it's ridiculous but you could make a logical argument that says if you really want your infants to go to heaven then you should kill them before they have a chance to "sin"!
  23. (IMO) Civilisation is a complicated thing to set up, develop and maintain. I guess that everyone wishes the "man with a gun over there" wasn't necessary. Perhaps the day will come when everyone lays down there arms - I hope so. In the meantime it's easier to sing the songs than solve the problems. For a large part of my life I was "a man with a gun over there" and felt then and still do that I was providing my country with essential protection and thereby aiding the development of civilisation.
  24. No problem - I suppose I was being rather pedantic. Perhaps using a LED was not the best choice of battery load.
  25. First of all I don't understand why I'm being warned for responding to a topic that already had a post that appeared today. I did not resurrect anything (IMO). Secondly, I don't see why I can't comment on something within my area of experience. All I said, which is true, is that connecting a battery to a LED will almost certainly destroy the LED. Additionally, different individual LEDs even of the same colour will require different voltages to survive (usually only nominally 2.2V) if used without a resistor. Now, if I'm accused of "spoiling a game" I might be able to accept that.
