  1. What keeps you from taking extra classes? It's the equivalent of going to a school that goes twice as fast isn't it?

    Well I'm thinking about it, and I'm a pretty young guy, so if I stay and get my PhD directly, maybe I could go to a company and do research for like 3-4 years and than get my MBA after that point.

Thats completely fine, but at school you're going to do so much of pure theory anyway you're going to be saturated by it. If you listen to me, when you get there, you can have some perspective because you actually went through all the steps before. About some ideas, I mean there's so much you could do that could be beneficial its hard to pick something. One thing you MIGHT be able to pull off is build your own heater+humidifier. It'll help you when you get into your thermo and heat transfer classes. Most of all, try to keep it REALLY basic, and stay really formal, make sure you draw up everything. Try to figure out as much as you can by yourself before you ask for help, it'll stick better plus it'll teach the joys of research. I dunno what you background is like, or what your hobbies are, so I dont know what you know, just make sure you don't go nuts with rare materials or power consumption. If you need money and ideas, ask your parents if they need something done around the house. That way, they can fund you and you'll definetly earn some brownie points. ** Don't kill yourself, so whatever you decide to do put it up here and im sure someone, even me, might help you out in staying safe. " Thats not what I said, and I guess I could come off as a moron if you claim that I say things I didn't say.

If you're really interested in Mech engineering I'll help you out for something thats a lot more fun than reading books and will be a lot more useful to you Pick an interest you have, I dont know what you're into but you know, cars, bikes, carpentry, whatever is fun. Now think about some sort of device or machine that can help you in that hobby. Draw up a plan on how to make it, get some ideas with research, get creative on how to build it, and go make it. For example, I wanted a hammock in my backyard, so I drew up plans on what I wanted, read about them on the net, went to home depot, got the crap and built it. I failed miserably the first time, so I tried again with a better plan in mind. Another example, I wanted a vaporizer for smoking pot, so I read about them on the net, got some ideas on what I wanted, went dumpster diving and get some parts from home depot, and walla, vaporizer. This kind of mini project will teach you some much more about Mech Eng since you're new than any book could. Just remember to draw up the plans, be formal, count costs as you go, and have fun with it. Plus its so much more rewarding and best of all you get something useful out of it. Reading about a whole lot of equations and stuff is what you do in classes, but if you really wanna know the best part of being ME its designing a part, and making it.
  8. Walden, dude, your last 3 weeks before engineering school should all be all fun man. Smoke pot, get drunk, get laid brother. Seriously once you get into school fun time is freaking over for like the next 4 years, especially if you take summer courses. Who cares about getting a bit ahead in 3 weeks I had a 4.0 in engineering school and I didn't do crap during the summer but the above. IF you're thinking about studying during your free time in engineering school, your best bet is just to take more classes instead till you dont have free time to spend on other stuff. Bro before you think im some sort of moron, I had a 4.0 I graduated in 3 years, have an applied math minor, lots of grad credit and I'm in the honors college as well as having won many awards during my time. Same major as you, but damn bro you still need to have fun.
  9. I don't understand how that would be deevolution though. We're gaining the ability to cure diseases, thus, they're not really defects anymore, so it doesn't affect the survivability of the species to have them. I.E if you can cure a swollen appendix easily, why doesn't it matter that people are born with them any more? If anything its sort of an evolution because it increases the survival rate of our species.
  10. As former boxer/submission wrestler I can tell you that being short can be advantageous in a fight if you understand how to use it. I'm 5'2 and have easily defeated guys taller than 6'2, sometimes with pure boxing skill. Inside boxing combined with dirty boxing can easily make short work of most the trash a trained fighter has to deal with on the streets. And since a lot of fights end up with grappling, a lower center of gravity helps a lot in wrestling. So yes, if you understand even the most basics of fighting, you'd know that because someone is shorter than you doesn't mean it is going to be an easy win. Not that fighting is a good way to solve problems (MMA is an awesome hobby, and reccomend it to anyone at least to try) but sometimes there's no other way out. I don't reccomend it unless someone is threatening your friends or family members with significant force, and you're 100% sure someone is going to raped, killed, and maimed if you don't act.
  11. Hey guys, I'm trying to decide between getting my PhD or my MS/MBA cause I really don't wanna try to get both (or I guess this is always an option). I'm going to tell you everything about me and what are my life goals. I have a 3.9 (I had straight A's but then get one D, do you think they'll forgive the D?) GPA in mechanical engineering with a minor in applied math and I'm graduating in 3 years with this being my last year. My plan was either to get my PhD (through a BS-PhD program) straight from here at my school NJIT, or get my masters and MBA. Preferably an MBA at a very good school, such as an Ivy League school. I have a lot of goals in my life and interests which only further complicates my dilemna. I'm going to list them in no particular order. 1.) I want to make a lot of money. 2.) I like doing research in materials sciences and particle technology and feel this is what I'd like to work in when my older. 3.) I want to have a respected profession, one that will have a greater impact on the world, which is why im interested in R&D. 4.) I'd like to invest the money I earn into businesses and real estate so that my children and their children will have something started for them that they can build on. Here are things I don't really mind. 1.) I don't mind working a lot, hell, I'll take working many many hours a day if it comes with greater pay and prestige. 2.) I dont mind working in high pressure competitive environments. 3.) I really don't mind changing myself or trying to take up new hobbies in order to advance myself through the career world. There are what I call super goals, goals that I will most likely never, ever, come close to achieving, but I think would be sweet to even have a chance at getting to. This is just the way I think, like I always like to set a really, really high impossible goal so that I have something to strive for. 1.) Becoming a world renowned researcher with a page in a history book. 2.) Becoming CEO of a large research based corporation. I've been talking to a lot of different people and they all have different advice for me and different outlooks, so it's nearly impossible for me to make a decision, I decided that random people from the net might shoot out some ideas that I could think about. **Quark? Can't I be a self replicating molecule?

  13. Hey guys, I just decided that I want to try to homebrew my own beer. I'm going to buy a kit with instructions and a premade recipe for Indian Pale Ale. Anyone have any experience or suggestions they'd like to share. Any advice would be well appreciated.
  14. I'd think some way to make it easier to shake would be your easiest bet. Cause the more you shake it the more volts you get right? Why don't you try like a shaker mill set up with a handle. It might actually work out kinda nicely for you. Though Calli probably has the best suggestion.

  16. Gauss, your, proof fails because all you did was prove that .99999....=.9999999.... Unless I'm missing something. All you need to do is use infinite summation with partial fractions and you'll get the right answer. I don't even understand where the debate is, anyone who has taken calc 2 should know the answer instantaneously. Or anyone who understands limits for that matter. Its a fairly simply idea I don't really see why anyone would have trouble grasping it unless they have very limited mathematical and conceptual capabilities.

  18. I can do about 85-100, but then again, I workout a whole lot. The ones where you clap behind your back seems a bit unrealistic as broader shouldered people wouldn't be able to clap their hands behind their back

  20. Standardized test scores are currently the best way to measure the ability of an individual to do well in college. I know its not the best. I think that overall what the schools do might be the best way.
  21. Ice 75% Fe2O3 25% Al powder by mass To make something really sweet, use MoO3, I'm sorry I forgot that exact measurements for using MoO3. To make a really big splosion, get a milling machine, and mill the powders together with about 2 mL of hexane for every ten grams used for exactly 30 minutes. This powder will be VERY explosive. So please be careful. I suggest use tungsten but anything will enjoy. Enjoy the pyromania.
