forming what?..the mass of the wood also increases (it combines with oxygen)0 -
Because when magnesium is burnt in air, it reacts with O forming MgO and continues increasing in mass, because it's synthesis. But when wood is brunt, it decreases because it resolves to CO2 and H2O.

I thought the tabula rasa theory went out the window some time ago. Since it's not true.
"Tabula rasa", whose best deputy was John Locke ,says that when humans are born, they're just like a empty book, and during the life (empirism) that book is gradually filled.
By saying that tabula rasa went out of the window you're saying that that book is filled before we're born. Jean-Paul Sartre would call this madness because what you're saying is essence foregos existence, and in philosophy that is wrong my friend!

Which is what you get when you set the gravitational and centripetal force terms equal, which has already been discussed. (since g = Gm/R2)
ok, sorry then, I just had no time to look at all the posts!

Uh, hum, I'm positive that life doesn't have a purpose, unless you give it one.
In a way, you're right. In philosophy this can otherwise be said "existence foregos essence". That means humans become the way they work things out, as when humans are born they are "tabula rasa".

Yes, me too. Long time ago space (well they said matter) was thought to be continuous, but nowdays physics tells about it's discrete feature!Yes, I believe space is discrete, don't see how it could be anything other.String theory, with or without "string bits" is silly.

If you could fire a rifle on the Moon (i assume you can) what would the muzzle velocity of a rifle need to be to send a bullet into orbit around the Moon?
You can find that out by using first cosmic velocity formula [math]v=\sqrt{gR}[/math]

The "Heavy Boot"-ers
It's freaky funny man! This just GOT TO BE a joke! I mean, how is possible this to be true? Isn't that as far as naivety can go? GOD!!!!!!!!!

Life also seeks to enjoy itself, or enable situations whereby the enjoyment can be sustained.
some say Hedonism, I think of it more like Pleasure seeking / Pain avoidance.
We'll generally yeah. I mean, it depends from where we look it from. If we seek the purpose of life from a scientific point of view, then life's purpose is to reproduce, so life can go on!
But from a human point of view, yeah, PLEASURE is our holly grail!

Hi guys!
Reactivity and ionization energy are in a way the opposite from each other. I mean, with the increase of the ionization energy, reactivity drops. That's why inert gases have very very low reactivity, because of their high ionization energy.
But when learning at school for Group 17 elements there is a paragraph that states: "Reactivity in this group decreases starting from F to I."
Ionization energy decreases when going down groups, and normally reactivity should increase. But according to that previous quote reactivity decreases with the decrease in ionization energy:eek:  .
Now how right is that?

and where did you get this idea from?
thet would require a preffered frame in which to measure the movement and mean everything that accelerates to zero velocity will disappear. why don't we see things eroding if they accelerate through zero velocity?
I said matter and energy are the same thing based on this:
[math]E=mc^2[/math]
because when an object that has mass reaches the speed of light (just making assumptions!), its mass is completely converted into energy, as is gives the maximum energy containing in its mass.
And:
[math]a=\frac{v}{t}[/math]
Zero veloctiy means zero acceleration!

The lightest atoms (eg hydrogen) can be blown out of the atmosphere by the solar wind, which is why light planets don't have much hydrogen compounds such as water.
I think that's because they're on the outer layers of atmosphere (because of their weight), like tritium.

Well you literally have nothing left. Matter cannot exist without movement, and there is no movement without matter. But this movement to happen you need energy, so matter and energy are basically the same thing. So if you take out matter, you neither have energy!

Under heavy gravity, we would have more air pressure and more oxygen. This is generally a good thing. The thicker atmosphere would block more radiation, so cancer should go down.
If the gravity is too strong, going aquatic may be a solution.
Yeah, I agree with you, but having more oxygen is not always a good thing. Having more oxygen increases the rate of oxidation process, and that would be a serious problem for our internal organs, because high oxygen concentration would cause their dissolution.
Oxygen (in air) has very strong oxidative features, but high concentration of nitrogen (N) is a factor that "reduces" this feature. And if it weren't for nitrogen, our internal organs would dissolve because of oxygen's high oxidative features.

I know the earth absorbs matter from the universe and I imagine some matter escapes.
There is something called "Conservation of Matter" which states that the amount of matter is always constant. Nothing can escape from earth (except space rockets) because nothing has natural velocity able to escape earth's gravitational field.

heat is not a measure of particle speed
If heat is not the expansion of a system due to particle movement, what is it?
Particle speed determines the heat of a system, because heat is actually due to kinetic energy (energy of movement). When particles have greater kinetic energy, they move with higher velocities so the probability that particles will hit each other is bigger. And when particles hit each other, heat is produced, so higher particle speed = greater heat.

Whist I also got [math]x \in (-\infty , -2)[/math], (did I say that? I forget.) I can see no flaw in HallsOfIvy's reasoning and unless you can find the flaw that trumps any appeal non specific authority.
So you can that's it? That's the solution?

I guess I'm one of you too. I spend pages and pages and pages on that drill, and yet it always turned the same result:doh: .no one on sfn, safe for possibly two or three people, will understand math on a PhD level.Thnx

log(-5) = ?
I asked myself too about that, and I agree, you are completely right, but I got this PhD book that says what I previously posted.

Perhaps you should enlighten us and tell us a solution.
sure, -infinite<x<-2

So, that would mean, disregarding burns etc., that if I had a stick weighing, I don't know, half a kilo or something, and a 10 km high flame on it, I could still pick it up?
Well first there's no flame 10 km high, but even if there was the fact that it has gone so high tells that it is extremely light, a lot lighter than the air, so the possibility to pick it up cannot be dismissed.

Does life have purpose?

We have only few things, like instincts, and that's normal, even animals have those. I was referring to mental abilities.
