  4. do electrolysis of metal and NaCl, the sample will not be the most pure, but you can recrystalize it. ionic equation (using copper as the metal) 2Na+ + 2Cl- + Cu2+ + 2H+ + 2OH --> CuCl + NaOH + H2

  8. again, as i said with the 'cheap NaOH' thread there are shops that will sell it (like hard ware stores and plumbing shops) under the name spirits of salt. it costs about £2-5 for a litre... if you cant find it, look on ebay seller Bio-stains (might not have the '-')

  12. is there a way to make iodine with out using acids and peroxides? I was thinking mixing solutions of KCl/NaCl and KI/NaI would this work? not sure on the ratios but in theory should work...

  16. i know some one who was studying for her masters and another student done up the bottle of DCM too tight and it broke! she said the lab had to be evacuated and the students took it in turns to mop up the spillage until they 'felt dizzy'!
