  1. Is time merely an invention of the mind? Or is time another dimension that the commonly known three dimensions travel through? Can anyone find a time-particle or a time-wave? Time cannot be measured by the senses; only by man-made, man-devised inventions which, when being used, 'make' their own 'time'. Does time pass in a place where it cannot be measured? If so, how can it be proved? There is no such thing as the observable present. Everything we see or know about comes from the past. (These points are not meant to cause arguments; just discussions. They are questions or theories of my own. Please could people try to answer any of these, or show how they are right/wrong.) Don't insult me for my questions.
  2. Point accepted. So he has creationist views. I was fooled into thinking they were scientific. I admit that his book is unreliable, and i cannot argue for or against it effectively since it was a few years since i last read it. I appreciate everyone's comments. Thank you.
  3. I don't mean to be rude, but have you read the book yourelf? I do not know whether the author is a creationist in his believes, but i do know that he does not state any creationist views in the book itself. The title's wording does not immediately point to a creationist author; it could have been used as an eye-catching title that was related to the topic of the book. (the following paragraph is based on my understanding of the book and is not to be taken as definite fact) The reason he is attempting to 'shoot down' the current theories on evolution is because he disagrees with the dating system used (different forms of carbon-dating), saying that it is inaccurate. He then expliains this, and gives different dating methods which provide a whole range of answers to the earth's age, many of which are nowhere near the current estimate. When analysing this book, one has to remember that it was written a while ago and so the author did not have access to all the information we now know. He written several books on the topic, two of which are: "The Facts of Life: Shattering the Myth of Darwinism" "Alternative Science: Challenging the Myths of the Scientific Establishment" I thank you for the site link; it has proved to be very interesting in its context.
  4. From what i read of this book, it bears no mention of creationism or any other similar aspect. It mearly tries to undermine the theory of evolution through natural selection (Darwinism) by disproving many aspects of the theory's evidence. It is the opposing ideas, facts and theories that i am questioning. All the evidence and reaoning in the book is entirely scientific with no mention of and god. This is why i orriginally went along with it.
  5. I found this book a while ago, and managed to read most of it. It challenged my ideas at the time but, looking back with an analytical approach, I find that some thing don't seem to sound quite right. If anyone else has read this book, please tell me what you think. How much of what is said is true at face value, and how much is made up of facts that have been specifically worded to create the wrong impression? Also, how much of the 'facts' are merely oppinions stated as facts? I would like to know how reliable this information is. Click on this link to Amazon.com to view the book.
  6. Does anone else have some funny stories such as these? (this might be classed as diverging from the thread titl, but i started it, so i think it should be feasable)
  7. I saw this a while back; around the time of the london bombings, and thought it quite amusing. (Please note that this is not intended to offend anyone, and if it does, than I appologise for posting it.) The British are feeling the pinch in relation to recent bombings and have raised their security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved." Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross." Londoners have not been "A Bit Cross" since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies all but ran out. Terrorists have been re-categorised from "Tiresome" to a "Bloody Nuisance." The last time the British issued a "Bloody Nuisance" warning level was during the great fire of 1666. Also, the French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from "Run" to "Hide." The only two higher levels in France are "Surrender" and "Collaborate." The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France's white flag factory, effectively paralysing the country's military capability. It's not only the English and French that are on a heightened level of alert. Italy has increased the alert level from "Shout Loudly and Excitedly" to "Elaborate Military Posturing." Two more levels remain: "Ineffective Combat Operations" and "Change Sides." The Germans also increased their alert state from "Disdainful Arrogance" to "Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs." They also have two higher levels: "Invade a Neighbour" and "Lose." Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual, and the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels.
  8. Thank you....again! I'll have a go at using 'Microsoft Powerpoint' as my presentation aid. Do you have any suggestions to help me make the most of powerpoint, or do you know of any advanced controlls that i cold use to my benefit?
  9. Thank you for that information. I have done some research myself, and come up with a few different universities, which have courses that I am interested in. Some of the engineering-based course options that appeal to me are 'Space Engineering', 'Mechatronics/Robotics', 'Nanotechnology', 'Microelectronics', and a few others that are linked to mechanical and/or electronical engineering. Does anyone have any comments on the following universities? (reputation, past experiences, recomendations, good research, surrounding areas etc) Aston Brunel Imperial College Leeds Loughborough
  10. Thank you for your help; it is much appreciated. Also, if anyone has any tips on presentation techniques and such like, please feel free to share your knowledge.
  11. I am doing A' level physics, and for one of my courseworks, I am doing a presentation on nylon; its history, properties and uses. I am currently at the research stage, so any pointers would be much appreciated. If you know of any good websites, books, journals, articles or any other pieces of information, which would be of use, then please tell me. Thank you in advance.
  12. When conducting an experiment to test the relationship between the enthalpy changes of different alchols, I came across something which i couldn't explain. Taking propan-1-ol and propan-2-ol as an example, I found that propan-1-ol had a higher enthalpy change. Could someone explain to me why this is so. (the same thing happened for butan-1-ol and butan-2-ol) Although I have no precise knowledge to base my hypothesis on, I would have expected this relationship to be the other way round. Please help.
  13. The European Commission have just announced an agreement whereby English will become the official language of the EU rather than German, which was also considered as a possibility. As part of the negotiations the New Labour Government has conceded that some English spelling has room for improvement and they have accepted a 5 year plan to phase in the new ''Euro-English'' as it will be known. In year 1 ''S'' will replace the soft ''C''. Sertainly, this will make the Sivil Sevants jump for joy. The hard ''C'' will also be dropped in favour of the ''K''. This should klear up konfusion and keyboards kan have 1 less letter. There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year, when the troublesome ''PH'' will be replaced with the ''F''. This will make words like fotograf 20% shorter. In the 3rd year publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible. Government will enkourage the removal of double letters which have always been a deterent to akurate speling. Also al wil agre that the horible mes of the silent ''E'' in the language is disgraseful, and they should go away. By the 4th year peopl wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing ''TH'' with ''Z'' and ''W'' with ''V''. Durind ze fifz yar, ze unesesary''O'' kan be dropd from vords kontaining ''OU'' and similar changs vud of kors be aplid to ozer kombinations of leters. After zis fifz yer, ve vil hav a reli sensibl riten styl. Zer vil be no mor trubls or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi tu understand ech ozer. Ze drem vil finali kum tru!!! (appologies to anyone who's seen this before... i just thought it was amusing)
  14. Is it something like this... The man's birthday is on the 30th December, and he made the statement on the 1st January?
  15. I am currently in the 6th form at school, and am looking to go to a university that has a good facility for either mechanical or electronical engineering courses. I would hope to do several years at university, achieving the highest qualification I can, followed by some years working in the Navy or the MOD as a chartered engineer. I am doing A levels (maths, further maths, physics, chemistry, electronics) and i expect to get mostly A grades with perhaps one or two B grades. Please could someone give me advice on where to go, or perhaps a good link where i could find out about the different options avaliable to me. Thank you in advance.
  16. I'm a newbie here, so i guess i should say hello to everyone! I'm looking forward to discovering people's views on certain topics. I'll be around.
