I have a question about black holes. I dont know much about them but I was thinking about it the other day and couldnt figure something out.

From what I understand, black holes are stars that have collapsed on themselves and now have gravity so powerful that light cannot even escape it. My question is this. When the star collapses all it does is become more dense (or so i would assume from the word "collapse"). So that means the original star had the same amount of mass as the black hole. So then why wouldnt the original star have the same amount of gravity that the black hole has? Why wouldnt regular stars trap light?

My first, wasn't that long ago actually.

  2. Ok I get that imaginary numbers are important but I'm still not sure how they are used. Like when my math teacher explained it she said that you cant take the square root of a negative number so i was made up to represent this. I just fail to see how this makes the equation any more solvable. You still can't have the square root of a negative and just because you put an i down doesn't change this.

  3. Well I do kind of have short fingers. Is it possible to buy everything seperately and still keep it close to $300 while getting everything a package would give me?

And yes I would go for sound over looks but I still want it too look cool :D

If I pay $200 for the guitar itself would I still have enough money for the amp, tuner etc? Could you recommend me a reasonable Ibanez?

  4. We just learned what these are today in math. I get the concept of it, but im not sure of its application.

Lets say you have a equation with a negative inside a square root. You turn it into an i. Im not sure how this would help you. I havn't taken calculas yet so maybe i'll learn it then?

  5. Now that human intelligence has evolved to what it is now, will the evolution process for us slow? Think about it. Instead of survival of the fittest we are able to keep people alive that would otherwise die out in nature, and these people are able to reproduce. So while evolution won't stop it seems like it would slow down.

So if this is the case, would it be possible for a "super-species" to evolve? It would take so long that some natural event would certainly come around and make that species extinct long before it could evolve to such an extent.

  6. I understand your arguement but then at what point does it stop? Im saying if you keep making laws like this then eventually the government will get closer and closer to dictating everything we do because they think its the best. Why doesn't the goverment just start telling us what we are allowed to eat and when we can eat it and make everyone go to the gym 3 times a week or you are fined? Sure it would probably be healthier but if I want to sit on my couch, get fat and take the risk of having a heart attack thats my choice. As long as it isn't infringing on other peoples rights then I think it's an individual choice.

  7. Regulating the things you can eat is a slippery slope. The government has absolutely no place in trying to protect people from themselves. If you want to go out and eat foods that are terrible for you, that's your decision, and your decision alone. Pretty soon they will decide that the government knows best on everything and suddenly we are communist. Instead of banning them, how about just educating people about them and letting them make their own choices. You know like that FREEDOM thing we keep hearing about.

  8. Ok Im having trouble on a calculus problem. How would I do this:

The number of gallons of water in a tank t minutes after the tank has started to drain is Q(t)=200(30-t)^2.

How fast is the water running out at the end of ten minutes?

  9. Sorry if this riddle has already been posted.

You have eight wooden blocks. 7 have exactly the same mass, while 1 has slightly more. The difference is so slight, you cannot tell by touch and feel alone, and must rely on the very precise balance scale you have in front of you.

In only two measurements, how can you absolutely determine which of the 8 blocks is the odd one out?
