  1. I'm more interested in the control and deeper understanding versus the method.

     

    If I am unable to develop chromosomes from scratch in my lifetime, I would be satisfied with integrating genomes and determine sustainability of the organism.

     

    There is just too many applications that could justify such research, experimentation and development.

     

    Someday, NASA may produce a cream / culture that could provide protection from space allowing us to explore with little more than modified scuba gear.

     

    And to think about innoculating living organisms into space to colonize objects in efforts to prepare for higher tropic levels.

     

    This is merely a brain storm thread with intent to bring others into the subject and provoke thought.

     

    BTW.... What are opines good for? I seen a list of them but have little detail as to their use.

  2. yeah... I don't know the limitations on the DNA transfer but I think it would be fun to have the ability to design a set of chromosomes and understand the entire genome.

     

    But, I'm sure there are so many maintainance genes and much activity that would prove to kick start into functioning.

     

    I believe I would need to have a functional eukaryotic cell (preferably an animal or even a protist at first) and try to add chromosomes/ plasmids to the point of replacing the original chromosome, finally to remove the original chromosome.

     

    I guess I could try to find a model organism, the karyotype, chromosome stain/banding patterns, inheritance patterns of various loci/ linkages, metabolome, genome, etc...

     

    The only problem is all the supposed junk DNA. There are the Introns,Exons, tandom repeats, etc...

     

    I don't know how many generations a cell could procede through before the missing Genomic material is missed.

     

    If we could completely remove the nulcear DNA and replace it with custom chromosomes and get all the orgnelle functioning again, we would be able to do some real research...

     

    I think understanding Stem Cell Biology, differentiation, etc... would be interesting starting points.

     

    A project such as this would require huge computing resources and database integration.

     

    In the end, I think we could set a good stage for the primary metabolism and then develop the secondary metabolism.

     

    From a book I have just picked up it seems to be within reach. This book is called "The Regulatory Genome".

     

    As I read more I will post info to promote a little thought.

  3. Agrobacterium can transfer genes pretty good. It's not like you have to worry about a pili.

     

    But, if you can work on a genomic level in a tissue culture medium you could probably find some interesting ways to allow crossover and other meiotic rearrangement.

  4. I wish I had the genomic material for metamorph functionality.

     

    Say the hox gene set for worm to fly metamorphism.

     

    If I could figure out some of the genomic characteristics of mitosis and meiosis chromosomal rearrangement down to the histone remodeling.

     

    I think it would be fun to experiment in interspecies chromosomal rearrangement in culture. Think about it... it is a symbiosis but typically only possible through horizontal gene transfer.

     

    It seems that sexual reproduction is great for the vertical, but, I believe we have lost our touch with our horizontal symbionts naturally found in nature.

     

    Any thoughts?

  5. If the class is Chemistry 101 it is ok to take online. It is a lot of general information and introductory stuff.

     

    General Chemistry develops an understanding of how to use math to determine quantities of atoms, molecules, energy (as heat, calories, etc...).

     

    When you are trying to apply the math to the reaction then you will want to make sure and understand the big picture.

     

    Depending on the quality of the online class will depend on if you want to take these classes online. If there are plety of video lectures I would consider it. If they expect you to search YouTube yourself instead of listing all the links themselves, I would not take it. Basically, gen chem books suck and are very hard to get the understanding needed.

     

    You may consider online organic and bio- chemistry classes.

     

    As far as learning chemical engineering you will need to understand many different reactions, reagents, substrates, enzymes, processes, and so much more.

     

    You may also want to determine the type of chemistry you want to pursue. If it is biochemistry or organic chemistry you may be working with a lot of cultures, DNA, RNA, protiens and much more.

     

    I think right now you could make a lot of money if you have a patent for a Zebra Mussel control agent. They are taking over the lakes in many US States.

     

    To really figure out what works will require an understanding of Zebra Mussel anatomy, physiology, neurology, etc...

     

    This is one of the things I would be interested in... lol

    pH of the water

    ORP (Oxidation Reduction Potential)

    Addiction to Pepsi and/or Coke products

     

    I know the addiction one is most likely going to be frowned upon. But if you think about the stomach how it is used to acidic drinks and high levels of sugars, etc... will cause plenty of concern.

     

    I think most of you that drink soda and other crappy drinks should really consider the health problems associated with them.

     

    You really just need to do like they do in the military. SUCK IT UP! Adapt!!!

     

    If the water is good drink it! If it is over treated you need to distill it.

     

    If you think you are intollerant then you should never drink another soda again!!!!

     

    Drink only water...

     

    So much disease related to all the flavored sugar water out there.

     

    Anyways... That's my advice/opinion.

  7. I think there is a problem with the direction you are going.

     

    A fuel such as alcohol will only contain so much energy.

     

    Why would you try to burn it slower?

     

    I think you should be more interested in burning it more efficiently.

     

    Making sure the thermal energy is transfered from the source to the substance you are trying to heat should be important.

     

    Use the appropriate metals (copper, stainless steal, cast iron, etc...) to contain the substance and distribute the energy efficiently.

     

    I think if you are trying to burn the fuel slower you may lose heat through environmental disipation and lose most if not all of the benefits of the gelling agent.

     

    I would also consider harnessing solar energy and using it for your thermal needs.

    I'm not too sure of the interest of the others looking for gelling agents for Alcohol.

    Well... I think there are possibly some improtant components to this art.

     

    What if our cytosol was more efficient at nutralizing free radicals?

     

    What if we added a chromosome/plasmid into a sperm or egg that promotes development of say a simple hydrocarbon into each of our cells?

     

    What if this simple hydrocarbon production was to temporarily increase to higher levels during puberty to the point were cellular metabolism was reduced?

     

    What if the hydrocarbon did not cause damage or slow down cellular signaling?

     

    What if the solution to any problems could be solved by increasing neural electrical levels (a battery pack... lol)?

     

    What if we could customize chromosomes?

     

    What if we could promote symbiosis with longer living species?

     

    What if ?????

     

    I KNOW there are TONNES of holes in these thoughts!

     

    I'm trying to be an original thinker... And not bicker over littlle technicalties.

     

    Let's look at other possibilities and then we can shoot holes in it!!!

     

    Do you all realize how important the mitochondrion was to us as animals?

    Do you realize how many possibilities there are?

    What if we just develop a life support system for our central nervous system?

    The nerve cells are the longest lasting cells......

  9. I believe understanding the subconcious activity is vital to answering the question.

     

    An awareness of the other person is essential. If you are aware there is someone there you will most likely have subconcious thoughts of that person.

     

    Someone may subconciously be thinking about that person and wondering if they are looking. With a quick glance you could be caught.

     

    I would guess that that person knew you had an opportunity to look at them and they were wondering if you used that opportunity to do so.

     

    You might look into a book called "Games People Play, The Psychology of Human Relationships".

    It sounds like this would have a lot to do with using antibodies to bind to specific orgaelle?

     

    I've never done fluorescent micorscopy (sorry).

     

    But if it is based on antibodies I would imagine you could find something from a government site such as NIAID, WHO, NIH, CDC or someone!!!

     

    Otherwise I would hit the Universities and last of all the Pharmers.

     

    You could look for YouTube videos/animations?!.

  11. Do Coral have a biofilm on their surface?

    Are the Algae embedded in the tissue of the coral?

     

    I'm sooo not familiar with coral (sorry).

     

    I know some Algae can fix nitrogen and/or Carbon but I'm not sure if they are part of a biofilm or tissue that is sybiotically supportive of the coral.

     

    I'm guessing the Algae is embedded and the cellular metabolites of the coral is dependant on the production of a essential product of the algae.

    Another guess is the need to fix a primary metabolite.

     

    Depending on that primary metabolite will probably depend on the availability and method of transfer (passive/active transport, diffusion/osmosis, etc...).

     

    I hope this may help develop a better understanding on the symbiotic nature between the two.

  12. I'm not too sure if you are also thinking of COPD. I believe this can cause backup of blood between the lungs and heart. or something like that.

     

    If it is only specific about the elasticity of the lungs then you should consider the tissue and cells that produces the lungs.

     

    Once you understand the tissue then you should understand the complex nature of lung elasticity.

     

    You could then consider a situation when such a problem could occur.

     

    If someone walks into a store and the store is full of a gas. The person takes a deep breath. Now the chemical hypothetically causes the lungs to lose its elasticity.

     

    What would the outcome be?

    I would imagine the muscles would react quickly and cause the exhalation of the gas. Much like a reflex.

     

    Consider the diaphram, intercostal muscles, and the nature of the lung tissue.

    Consider the muscles and how they will be larger if they have to work harder to draw in a breath.

     

    Also, don't forget the question marks!!!

  13. Muscles in the region will assist the flow of blood.

     

    Notice that patients that are in a hospital for a long period are given air bags that strap on to their legs. They inflate and deflate.

    This simulates muscle contractions and helps blood flow!

     

    To avoid the numbness/circulation issue you could raise up on your toes and back down.

    This will help your calf muscle contract and move blood.

     

    To work the upper legs you can squat down and stand up to work the upper areas.

     

    This is important for people who are flying on planes for long periods of time!!!!!!!

    I think while I read I will try to maintain an interest in bioremediation of marine cultures.

  15. I would focus on understanding the three main bone forming cells.

     

    Osteocytes

    Osteoblasts

    Osteoclasts

     

    Then if you need to dig deeper, I would determine the cells from which they arise.

     

    If you are looking for information on how they develop then I would look into the Homeotic genes or HOX genes. But then this is developmental biology....

  16. I think you would have issues with the major histocompatability complex and the immune system which is embedded in the genetics.

     

    I'm sure there would be some antigens that would interfere down the road while the cells develop.

     

    Kinda like a host v graft transplant rejection.

     

    I'm sure you could try to suppress the immune system.

     

    But why?

     

    Is there a benefit?

     

    Does it out weigh the need for an immune system?

     

    Does it out weigh the need for a foreign species cytoplasm?

     

    If you refer to the dinosaur DNA (just for gigglez) and the reptile cell transfer then you have to think about the whole thing again.

     

    You will most likely not have a dinosaur ovum or even a folicle.

    Then you would have to implant any possible Dino DNA into the reptile ovum.

    I think you would be better off taking the Dino DNA and use it for recombination.

    Just horizontal transfer of DNA.

    You can easily create more questions than answers with this subject.

    I had considered organic synthesis a long time ago. But then I started looking into the Grignard Reagents. This was really interesting.

     

    I actually am still interested in the Grignard reagents but I havn't had time... lol

     

    You should look into it if you are interested in organic synthesis.

    It is kinda hard to find a chemical that isn't alread in use.

     

    I find it more interesting to use living organisms to make most of the chemicals for me.

     

    This is along the lines of Metabolic Engineering.

     

    You don't really have to do much except study the organism and determine what is possible.

     

    I'm not sure what your chemical/s of interest are but organic and inorganic synthesis from simple precursors is not always the easiest route.

     

    There are sooo many plants, animals, fungi, etc... that could be studied and discovered. These are some of the greatest chemical reactors you could harness.

     

    Think about it!!!

  19. I think you should consider the evolutionary root of alpha male domination within its' own species and in its' environment...

     

    I think this will help you understand the nature of violence. This may go as far back as worm neural development and cognition.

     

    Maybe as the people prior have noted that adrenaline is a major factor. Maybe an adaption to violence. This is most likely when the first omnivores/ predators evolved.

     

    Adrenaline is just a tool to cause the sudden release of sugar into circulation. There may be other functions (I'm not too sure...).

    I think it is emotional intelligence.

     

    It's cognitive.

    I was primarily trying to paint a picture of the nature of what I think emotional intelligence is.
