The irritation you experienced is probably from the DCM. I've split that on me before and it does effect your skin. While MeI is a carcinogen and not very nice for ur skin but with that said you should keep an eye on the area. If the irritaton doesnt go away after a day or two then you should go back to the doctor.

Im not sure about using Grignards to make alkenes....there are easier ways to alkenes than using them...my guess eold be to have formaldehyde and treat that with 4-methyl pentant-1-magnesium bromide and then treating this with a strong acid to eliminate water generating the alkene

The mineral oil can be removed easily by washing it with hexane/petrol. However be very sure that you do it carefully incase it burns which could be rather dangerous! I would advice against adding an alkali metal to acid but if u use tiny amounts and cold acid you should be ok....but only if your confident of ur ability!

Well if you are not inteending to use chemistry as a career, then GCSE is as much as you would need in everyday life and other job areas. There is a very large jump from GCSE to A-level in terms of ideas and understanding which you'll only need if you're planning on using it at Uni

Chemistry is not just about mixing A and B together to get C. Granted some of chemistry is like that but you need to remember that the hard part is working out what you need to add, how much, when to add, how to purify, is what I got what i expceted, stereocontrol, getting a good yeild etc....thats just synthetic chemistry. Chemistry also involves the study of kinetics of reactions (i.e. how fast they go), determining mechanisms (the route a reaction takes), theoretical chemistry (using computer models to estimate how certain reactions may proceed), structural studies (the structure and arrangement of atoms etc) So no chemistry is not just about mixing stuff together!

You could consider the different subjects they study. In ym experience, women tend to study biological based subjects where as men tend towards physical subjects (e.g. maths, engeneering)
