  1. Tell you what, here's a better way to remember the definition of Ka. Ka = [H+][A-] / [HA]=(x)(x)/M-(x) That will help you see the relationship between the values, as well as summarizing what I said above.
  2. Wow, I am humbled by your infinite wisdom. You have a way with words. Have you been reading the thesaurus again?
  3. Well, let's see. Apply a few rules of stoichiometry here: Let's use 0.125M benzoic acid (C6H5COOH). Given that its pH is 2.55 at equilibrium. The ionization equation would be like this: C6H5COOH => H3O+ + C6H5COO-. antilog(2.55) gives us a [H3O+]=2.8*10^-3M. From the equation seen above we get 2.8*10^-3M of C6H5COO- for every 2.8*10^-3M of H3O+ produced. So you get that. Now, because 2.8*10^-3M of H3O+ was produced that much C6H5COOH was ionized. If 2.8 * 10^-3 M C6H5COOH was consumed then the final equilibrium concentration left would be the amount ionized subtracted from the initial concentration. We get 0.125M-0.0028M=0.1222M. Go ahead and put all the numbers in your equation now.
  4. In quadratic equations we take 2 values of the answer all the time. I don't see why when it comes to square roots it changes. After all, it's all the same. You're just solving x^2=4. I saw this over in the Brainteasers forum, and it has a curious ambivalence to it as well like the 1=2 theory above. 1 RS = 1 RS 1 RS = 100 PAISE 1 RS = (10x10) PAISE 1 RS = (0.1x0.1) RS 1 RS = 0.01 RS 1 RS = 1 PAISE??
  5. Master Yoda, that was quite a display of verbal bravado, but foolish. I would have thought that you'd have learned your lesson. It is obvious that this contest cannot be decided by our knowledge of the force, or skills with a blade, but by the eloquency of our speech as we launch waves upon waves of verbal attacks upon each other. Your ineptitude at normal-order speech is incongruous here. Master Yoda, you have fought gallantly with your inferior tongue, worthy of recognition in the Jedi Archive, but now, it is finished. Surely you must realize that my fluency of speech is far beyond yours. Now, back down.
  6. SciFi, Thriller and Action movies. Some of the best ones I've seen are Aliens, War of the Worlds (althought the ending was a bit to abrupt), and a lot of Arnold Schwazzeneger's old movies like True Lies. Oh yea, I seem to like Cillian Murphy's movies a lot, including Batman Begins, Red Eye and 28 days later.
  7. My username I thought of when I first registered and had absolutely no idea whatsoever of anything, and in a desperate struggle against my own unfathomable lack of creativity I gave myself the most banal username ever thought in a brain. The Thing. My Avatar, well, I do like SW, but Dooku is by far my favourite character. He's so...civilized and old-styled. Unlike "Annie" Dooku is so calm and experienced and powerful. It was a shame to see how he died. I HATE ANAKIN!! DIE!!! "It's not the Jedi way!" AP, Master Yoda, I have become more powerful than any Jedi, even you.
  8. Oh, sorry. Did I type SO2? I meant SO3. Then you get H2S2O7 like I said above, and everything else.
  9. Oh yea. Then you get another pleasant shock as you realize that the new orbitals (the non-circular weird shapes that electrons orbit the nucleus in) don't even contain the electrons, but are merely a space where the electron is "likely" to be found.
  10. Sulphur is insoluble in water. However, it is soluble with most nonpolar solvents. Hmm.. Let's see, for sulphuric acid making... You need to burn liquid sulphur in air to make sulphur dioxide. Then, the sulphur dioxide has to be oxidized by the Contact Process with the catalyst of V2O5, about 450 degrees Celsius and a pressure of 1 - 2 atm. (oh yea, the reaction's exothermic). The result is sulphur trioxide. Combine this with water and you got yourself some sulphuric acid!! Now, the difficult part: Do you have the apparatus for this? If not, please don't do it. Actually, DO NOT do it anyhow. The process above produces droplets of sulphuric acid almost impossible to condense, not to mention it is extremely exothermic. If you can really get the above going; if you can really make SO2 with your equipments without dying, then you can try treating the SO2 with 98% concentrated sulphuric acid to get H2S2O7 (fuming sulphuric acid). Add water to this and you get H2SO4.
  11. The Arrhenius acids and bases are those chemicals that ionize into H+ and OH-, respectively. However, not all bases have to contain the OH- radical according Bronsted-Lowry explanations of acids and bases. The Bronsted-Lowry defines an acid as a proton (H+) donor and a base a proton acceptor. Mark that the "donor" actually has its proton taken away with energy, not given away. According to Bronsted-Lowry theory, when HCl reacts with water, the H2O is a base as well.
  12. Yes. That was what I wrote. Sigma bonds are created when hybridized orbitals overlap, such as all of the bonds in a methane molecule. Pi bonds are created when unhybridized parellel orbitals share electrons above and below a sigma bond (in a double bond). Thus, a double bond contains one sigma and one pi bond.
  13. Consider this: Let's take methane as an example, and see what happens if the C-H bonds are created without hybridization. 1. the 2p and 2s atomic orbitals will lead to two different C-H bonds, namely the overlapping of the Carbon's 2s and Hydrogen's 1s, and the overlapping of the Carbon's 2p and Hydrgoen's 1s. This can't be, because it is determined that methane has 4 identical C-H bonds. 2. The 2p orbitals of carbon are perpendicular, thus creating 90 degree angles with the hydrogen atoms. However, the shape of a methane molecule is tetrahedral, and thus the angles between bonds are 109.5 degrees. So, either the entire model of the atom is wrong, or the atoms didn't bond with unhybridized orbitals and used something other than their native orbitals. Hence the hybridization, and in this case the 3 2p orbitals and the 1 2s orbital merge, and this is the sp3 hybridization. There are also sp2, sp, dsp3 and other hybridizations, but the principle is essentially the same. There are two kinds of covalent bonds, the sigma and the pi bond. To understand the sigma and pi bonds better, look at a ethylene molecule, and you'll see the sigma bond of C=C bond in ethylene is a result of a sp2 hybridization, and each carbon atom has one unhybridized 2p orbital. To visualize this, the hybrid orbitals of the carbon atoms can be seen as a trigonal planar shape, and two ends of the "triangle" are sigma bonding with the 1s orbitals of the hydrogen, and the other end is sigma bonding with the other C atom. The unhybridized orbitals provide a pi bond, thus accounting for the double bond of C=C.
  14. I rather like something seemingly complex, so I could get a good mark on it =). Something impressive looking, like a van der graaf generator or even a tesla coil mentioned, but less lethal.
  15. This project will have to have some sort of outcome, that is like the conclusion, before that a hypothesis, exactly like a science fair project. So far I think the spherical cup coffee experiment seems interesting, any other ideas??
  16. Our teacher for science requires an "advanced" project for our Enriched class, and some of it might be entered into the provincial science fair. I have absolutely no idea as to what to make. Any ideas on what I can experiment with? This is just like a science fair project. I am 10th grade, and am interested mainly in Chemistry, but Physics & Engineering are good too. As for the difficulty, I was thinking as advanced as possible, more exciting than an vinegar-soda volcano and less lethal than a tesla coil. Sonouminescence, or some other topics of that level which I CAN DO AN EXPERIMENT WITH. And I prefer an experiment in which very few people have died. Thanks a lot.
  17. This might be an extremely dumb question, but I'll ask it anyways. Are the sites hackthissite.org and the dievo.org safe? That is to say, do they do anything bad to you and your computer (like installing spyware in Internet Temp files or something worse than that)? Do I need an annonymizer while surfing these sites? Many thanx.
  18. I don't get what's after mind6 (in Hook) . I can't seem to find it. Is it because Im using IE?
  19. Can ANYONE tell me how to start playing this game? The Challenge text is not a link so can't click it. So how do I start playing??????
  20. I DID! Like I said, the Challenge cannot be clicked. It is just there. i click, nothing happens.
  21. Where do I GO TO EVEN START PLAYING THIS WEIRD GAME?
  22. The question is, how do you START to play?
  23. The "Challenge" is neither a link nor a button. I can't figure out how to play this thing.
  24. Ppl with myopia actually see better with squinted eyes, and those with normal eyes aren't affected by squinting. As normal eyes and near-sightedness are more common, I can't think of why squinting makes it harder to see.
