  1. Raider,

Perhaps its an error to believe nothing can travel faster than the 'speed of light in a vacuum'.

Hmmm, I thought about this. In a technical sense things CAN travel faster then light! Surprise! Time slows down though, so nothing can. The faster you get time always slows down enough so you aren't going faster then light.

  2. Giant mirror... Do you mean, the sail itself, or a giant mirror to concentrate some light on a smaller sail? Because at astronomical distances, concentrated light isn't inside human technology. Sunlight sails at slightly outside the fringe of what we do up to now, but sending 1kW/m2 to just one Sun-Earth distance is very far from anything we do now, and since much effort has already been done, further progress will be slower than on sunlight sails. I know that one project wants to push a tiny sail to a nearby star by concentrating something like 1GW on it, emitted over 1km2. That's a perfect example of a project much exaggerated over many aspects at the same time, expected to cost horribly much for a doubtful result. While its goal is seducing, I radically prefer to develop sunlight sails, something cheaper than most space projects, and which shows a clear usefulness.

Delightful response!! Thank you soooooo much! As for giant mirrors, I was referring to the sails, which I assumed reflected the pressurized radiation, or something like that.

  3. Hi guys, I was wondering if someone could give me some specifics on how Solar Sails work. I understand them, I was just wondering if there is anything I should note when explaining these things. Also, would it be possible to build this? I mean, not counting the response of the public if we were to start funding a giant mirror....

  4. I would think not, you see, inside a black hole is just a lot of really dense matter. I can explain to you how a black hole works, but I don't think that's what you want to hear. The biggest problem with your idea is that the universe isn't really dense, most of it is just space. Inside a black hole, that's not how it is. Also, how are there black holes inside black holes? Einstein figured out why the universe is expanding, and yours doesn't provide a very plausible explanation.

  5. There are no reports of transgender using their transgender status to access women's bathrooms to rape or commit sexual assault.

The attack isn't on transgender people mainly, it's about the people who simply "say" they are "transgender" to get inside the bathroom and rape someone. I mean I go to school, and since the law was changed I know 17 kids who went inside the opposite bathroom simply because they COULD. I mean, They don't identify as transgender, and I also know they are just doing it for kicks, and after a while it will stop, but still, the attack isn't on transgender people. If they're transgender, let them use what ever bathroom they want, thats their choice, but whats to stop abuse of the system? Because I'm pretty sure what happened in my school was "abuse"

  6. Well, the problem with using human blood as fuel is that the person wearing the exo skeleton could only wear it for a limited amount of time before they either DIED or got seriously exhausted and be unable to go on. I think the best way one would work is to simply have a battery that would recharge, it would be alot safer. Also, a motor that uses human blood is just..... I shouldn't even have to explain how wrong that is.

  7. Hey, Im new here, I have a theory I thought up and my friend suggested I post this here. I have no idea whether this could be plausible or not, however I have an idea for how higher dimensions work above the 4th. So the other day I saw a video talking about using higher dimensions as shortcuts to travel such as if you draw a line on a piece of paper you can instead of going along the line, you could fold the paper and go directly from point a to point b, similar to how a wormhole would work in theory. So where I started thinking was I imagined the 4th dimension 'time' as the entire span of a single timeline as a single point. and so if you wanted to reach a different timeline you would have to take a shortcut through the higher 5th dimension and draw a line between these two points in the lower dimensional representation so that the 1st = 4th (a point) and the 2nd = the 5th (a line). Then to get the 6th dimension you would go another higher from the second dimension to the third in which case the 6th dimension would be every possible timeline of a single universe becoming a cube of timelines. You could then condense that single universe to a single point and repeat the same process up to the 8th dimension in which it would be every possible universe. I hope I explained my idea well enough, I've heard that there are 11 dimensions but using my theory I cant figure out what could come after the 8th dimension being every possible universe. Could you let me know your thoughts?

Ok, I'm going to have crack at explaining his "theory". So there are the first 3 dimensions. Horizontal, then vertical, then a cube blah blah blah, I hope you guys understand that. Once you get to the 4th, you start thinking in terms of time. To do this, let's imagine the 4th dimension is the first dimension, left to right. You travel this dimension by going Up/right the "timestream" and down/left the "timestream" Moving though these changes where you are on the time stream. Say your in timestream "A" you can travel the time stream.

Once you reach the 5th dimension, your traveling between 2/infinite time streams. This means not only are you on time stream "A" but now you can move to time stream "B" The 6th dimension would be traveling throughout EVERY possible time stream in a SINGLE universe, which is where it starts getting confusing. You're already traveling through time streams, but in the 5th I'm assuming it isn't every possible timestream, but rather, something else*. Since the Universe is physical, something we can currently actually travel in, I'm assuming each time stream is a time stream of the whole universe.

Ok, If I'm correct, say something so we can base it off of this slightly less confusing explanation, meanwhile, I would like to point some things out.

A point isn't the first dimension, its 0 dimensions, without size in ANY direction. A line is the first dimension.

Your wormhole point is good, though most of us know it already. Just to be clear, wormholes are PURELY hypothetical, at least until we know they exist for sure.

The 11 dimensions you were talking about use string theory. Now just to be clear a dimension is usually telling you where something is, not traveling, which is the misinterpreted part for most people, including me. Say the center of earth was 0,0,0,0. That's 0X 0Y 0Z 0T, where T = time. So basically I would say meet me at 45,64,6324, at 10:00 P.M. (please don't)

    *Please clarify

  8. 4. If someone maliciously or mistakenly put viruses on the test, what are the odds of getting infected through it? (this is the ultimate question that has been driving me crazy)

Well, considering that most of the time the cotton swabs are sterilized, it has a low chance of being infected, even if it was on purpose. And to answer your question, there is no chemical that can keep HIV alive for more than a few hours without specific lab conditions. Since the swab was probably packaged for days before you ever even saw it, ANY Hiv in it would have died. Furthermore, if it somehow did have trace amounts of hiv it wouldn't be enough to give you hiv unless you had a actively bleeding cut in your mouth at the time which you probably didn't considering you wouldn't have done the test with your OCD if you did, because that's the way most people with OCD as major as your case would do. Even if you didn't actively think about the cut, your subconscious probably would have never scheduled the appointment, or even canceled it if you had a cut. So your near the 99.9999995% chance of safety. And I actually calculated this just for you, so it better make you feel better.

  9. From more realistic things, I would build the bigger the more powerful CERN-like particle accelerator near my apartment.. To play with my beloved particles..

From even more realistic things, I would build giant factory of solar panels, and give them away for free for everybody to put on their roofs. So they would not need anymore to buy electricity in their life.

Carbon-based power-plants would bankrupt, the rest more ecologic power plants would produce electricity for business clients. At least until they wouldn't get my solar panels also.

That would be interesting.... Though considering most of the people in my town are employed in Carbon-based Power-Plants, I'm hoping they have time to switch to other jobs. I always wanted to put solar panels on my tree house.

  10.

The irony of this ridiculous legislation is that more Republican men have been arrested for sexual misconduct in bathrooms while there are no reports of transgender being arrested for sexual misconduct in bathrooms.

Seriously? I know I'm a little late to respond to this, but SERIOUSLY? Am I the only one who sees that this is kind of biased? There are more Republicans (at least there are more then 0.3) than Transgender people you know, that may or may not play an independent variable. I mean seriously, did you even think that one through? Also, why is it only republicans? Or does Bill Clinton's case NOT count as misconduct? Also, more democrats commit sexual misconduct then transgender people. This is estimating that there are more sex offenders then there are transgender people. Geez man, come up with a half decent case here that's not biased that bad.

  11. Note that the end of the rod will never achieve that speed, however long it is.

This sounds a bit like the Ehrenfest paradox: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ehrenfest_paradox

Ok, I lost you there. From what I understand about the page is that the rods will contract or something? That or the speed will always change based upon the problem of the universal speed limit not allowing the end of the rod to get to that speed ..... Yeah, I'm lost.

  12. At that point, I think it's best to stop thinking of it as a pole and more of a very thick wire. And I don't think we have any materials at present with the tensile strength to sustain that. You're basically talking about a ridiculously long space elevator, and I think even normally conceived of space elevator is a little beyond us at this point, though not quite as far as what you are describing.

Ridiculously long? What? You mean a wire that reaches farther than mars is ridiculously long? You're ridiculous.

    :P

  13.

In my sleep, I've been known to whimper, bark, moan, pant...I think those dreams had something to do with squirrels :)

She sure does LOVE squirrels. Especially when I go chasing her through town in my PJs because she really wanted to say hi to one.

  14. The host of this MinutePhysics YouTube video says that if time travel were possible something called Quantum Supposition suggests that one could kill his or her grandfather from an earlier time and not vanish from existence as a consequence. To those of you who are more knowledgeable than I on the relevant theoretical physics, what are your thoughts? Are the host's assertions valid?

Well, I probably know less then you. My thoughts is that if time travel into the past were possible, then killing one's grandfather wouldn't matter because you would already be feeling the affects, meaning you already did it, so it never happened kind of, it's just....... it's tough to explain.

  15.

Terrorism is a Red Herring that's been enormously effective at causing a lot of chaos that creates climates of opportunity for opportunists. Terrorism is being wielded as a tool, not a weapon, one that gives the illusion that we need militant leadership to protect what we love from extremists who can't even muster enough support from their own people to field a proper army.

It's being used as a tool for obstructionism, which also happens to make a lot of money for a select few. And any suggestions to the contrary, like more negotiations with countries that harbor terrorists, get pounced upon as weak and ineffectual (even though the Soviet Union fell more to economics rather than active warfare).

Once again, it's conservatives throwing trillions of taxpayer dollars at a handful of extremists, and then convincing themselves that it's the liberals who are at fault. Cause the problem, blame everyone but yourself, ignore reality, and consider yourself a wise American citizen. Manipulated Conservatism.

    Amen

  16. I will do some more research into the care that they got the airbag from to see the specs on the airbag. I would assume that the airbag would have a small moment when the PSI would be immense because if the turkey. And tonight I will look to see the final dimenssions of the airbag.

I don't think the turkey would have made much of a difference. The reason is that airbags are deflating as soon as they start to fill. The high the PSI the faster they deflate, so the PSI should have only topped at about 5. They designed it like this so that if your in an accident, its not like getting hit in the face with a brick.

  17.

You should investigate these if you're going to post them as evidence. This one was rejected because we already have legislation in place that vets refugees from Syria adequately. It's a freaking two year process that's already very thorough. This maneuver was fear-mongering after the Paris attacks, suggesting that we're letting just anybody in, and that we don't already have Homeland Security going over these folks with a fine-toothed comb.

If you don't believe this, perhaps you could show where our current vetting process is flawed.

Nah, I'll take your word for it.

In truth though, why are we so scared of terrorist? I mean it's not like your very likely to get attacked or killed by one considering theres like what, 330 million people in the united states? And your most likely not a high priority target either. Seems like the terrorist are doing their job, causing unnecessary and pointless terror.

  18.

Only if "new" means 100 years old.

If we are talking astronomy, yes. One million years is considered new.

But yeah, I would polish up your ideas with an expert in the field before presenting them. You usually only have a few chances to present your ideas before people start labeling you as a nut job if your ideas don't make sense.
