  1. Hey everyone. As the title suggests, I have recently received a unique opportunity to participate in summer research at any reputable institution within the United States and it's territories. While I initially believed this to be an easy choice to make, I am beginning to find it difficult to decide on where to go.

     

    While I would like to keep the exact specifics of the program unknown, I can share that the research would be within the field of biomedical research. I realize that this is an incredibly broad field and that one person's experience somewhere could be radically different from another's who went to the same school. The reason I am posting this is to attempt to receive as much advice and feedback as possible about selecting the best program for me. I am lucky in that I truly enjoy almost every aspect of biology and the biomedical field, and while I am very interested in stem cell research, I would be equally happy working on something else.

     

    Additionally, feel free to PM me with personal experiences you may have at the top universities. I would like to hear the bad, good, and in between. Thanks in advance!

    I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to sample the exact same set of points within a yeast colony. I am trying to sample points from the center to the outer edge of a perfect circular yeast colony. The issue if trying to determine where the exact center is.

    I would like to hear everyones opinion on using Netlogo within the field of Biology as a tool for modeling emerging phenomenon? I have read quite a few papers on the benefits, so I am more interested in the possible negatives but would still like to hear whatever might be contributed.

    So this weekend I showed this cartoon to a female friend of mine and she had the best response. She said, "I think you're missing a lot of colors..." and then she listed another dozen colors that she thought of. No smile, straight face, etc. Looks like she didn't really see nor interpret the whole right half of this picture!

  5. Fascinating stuff. And what method would best accomplish the flushing of a PuR water filter Charon?

     

     

    Just wanted to mention, to a person that filters drinking water; that it is a double edge sword.

     

    Filtering obviously has the intent to remove whatever 'unclean' contaminants from water, piling up those in the filter.

    Keep in mind that all those unwanted unclean contaminants are in the filter; and that you are forcing the water source trough that same now unclean path.

     

    Determining when is the filter contaminated -5 minutes or 5 months- is tricky. If the filter holds a condensed soup of microorganisms, passing the water source trough them may not fulfill the intentions.

     

    So the next logical question to ask; which one is more harmful? A condensed soup of microorganisms or the possible contaminants I am trying to remove by filtering in the first place?

  6. My response was to a series studiot, not a sequence. My fault.

     

    I found today what I was missing. They are helpful in solving equations for which integration cannot be performed. I also learned that a harmonic series refers only to one specific series, not a collection.

     

    Also, the reason for determining partial sums was also made clearer. I found it strange that I was having so much difficulty, but found out from one of my math professors that entire classes are spent on dealing with these topics and that my initial confusion is somewhat warranted.

    This brought me slightly closer to understanding Unity.

     

    You should study sequences before you study series; they are simpler and it doesn't take long, have you done this?

    Your understanding of what convergence is, is also key.

     

    Can you say if the following sequence is convergent or divergent?

     

    1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1..........................................1,1,1,..................1,1,1,.......

     

    Divergent.

     

    I have studied series and sequences for quite some time now and am only having trouble putting the mathematical concepts into words. Usually, I am able to explain something to others but cannot do so when it comes to deciphering series and sequences. I know all of the definitions and have access to all the information regarding their notation. But I think it is the notation that is causing the confusion.

     

    I can easily memorize the rules but if I don't understand the whys I will fail miserably in my upper level mathematics courses.

    Also, I understand convergence to be to some finite number whereas, divergence, a limit DNE.

  8. What I am looking for is an explanation using only words. Specifically, why limits and integrals play a role and how you can determine just by looking at a series or sequence what steps you will need to take to determine whether or not it converges.

  9. I am having difficulty with infinite series and sequences within calculus. I am not quite sure where the difficulty is stemming from. I understand the general idea but when it comes to knowing when to utilize the comparison test, divergence test, integral test, ect., I cannot seem to make things click.

     

    I am hoping for a user friendly explanation.

     

    If this is too vague, I am happy to clarify specifics.

  10. Ten years ago, I had to take cold showers for 12 months after moving into a 'new' place that had no heating.

    It was ghastly.

    The most extreme feeling that it gave me was of how bad an experience it was but not hyper-aware;

    and It certainly left me feeling very awake in the mornings by an otherwise above average & quite persistent amount

    accompanied with a pleasant sense of relief that it was over.

    Having a warm shower (only very occasionally when visiting relations) was an utterly serene experience.

    I don't recommend it but I remember, years ago, hearing that it was popular in health spas.

  11. Suggestion, if many members have had problems with changing their picture because the picture is too large, maybe add a text box telling what size constraints are allowed. This would circumvent having a moderator addressing the problem.

     

    What is states currently:

    "Use a custom photo

    Once uploaded, you can adjust the cropped image.
    Recommend an image 200px or larger"

     

    I tried on multiple devices to change my photo and when I had no luck, contacted hypervalent.

    Actually, you may be mistaking genetic code with something else. Genetic code refers to codons which encode amino acids. For example, AUG is the start codon. All organisms obey the same rules applied to this code even if there are variations in the end product.

     

    Don't be alarmed. Many people and virtually all mainstream media use this term improperly.

    Just disagreeing with somebody should not constitute such a thing.

     

    You would learn it more concretely if you tried deciphering it yourself.

    Also, you are right. Simply stating "I disagree" does not constitute a logical fallacy. It's usually your reasons that follow that do.

    I don't want to stray too far from the discussion on ol' Dan, but what sorts of philosophers would you consider your favorites Peter? I ask because I want to see where you are coming from.

  15. I can tell you that dislocating your shoulder will cause your pinky to go numb. I know this from experience. There may be a pinch in a nerve somewhere along your arm but should go away after a week or so.
