  1. Sitting on your train at 6.50 a.m., revising your course of functional neuroanatomy of the basal ganglia, and while thinking about vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) in case of refractory epilepsy (it so happens I read an article on that), formulating a hypothesis on whether stimulation of certain nuclei of the thalamus would be a good treatment (integration of the class on basal ganglia), only to find out the very same day, during the first class of that day (a class on epilepsy), that this treat...

I'm saying that you're very smart and very interested/motivated. Once you graduate you may find medical academia frustrating and limiting. To compensate I hope you find the clinical work rewarding. You're a lot smarter and motivated than the average medic I've worked with.

Coming from someone who has worked at imperial college NHS trust for the last 5 years and now transitioning into physics and engineering in medicine from what I read from your posts you're wasted in medicine from an academic point of view. I hope you find the clinical work rewarding

  3. passed all exams, chosen to do physics and engineering in medicine msc at UCL. Considering my years of clinical experience and contacts I think it will be a more lucrative career.

Thanks, I sometimes daydream about being a theoretical physicist but I'm 26 and it's super competitive. I will continue to read as a hobby, maybe one day I will be able to contribute to the speculations page

I'm going to take a year out, read some masters books on the subject and I'm going to take a course in mathematical methods and fluid mechanics.

hahaha I think UCL is my number one choice. there's been a technicality with dates, my dissertation doesn't get marked until 5th dec, because of this i'm having to take a year out, UCL has reserved my place for a year. I'm taking this year to do an extra module in fluid mechanics and reading up on masters level physics

It's a straight physics msc, it has theoretical options, I'd like to do theoretical physics but I appreciate that I might not be smart enough for it. If i struggle with them I will move to a more practical/engineering area of the msc

I'd have to say thanks to you two and a few others who have helped me with homework questions. You've also tolerated my writing style which I think has improved because of it. UCL is my first choice but I'll happily take kings if they don't get back to me. ow study study study, final exams in early june :/

  15. I seriously do not like this reputation system. Everyone says "maybe you should review your posts to see why you got the negative rep". There's no pattern. Whoever it is giving me the negative rep just doesn't like me. Seriously, I said that "Seti might be interested in looking for creatures that can travel through imaginary time." I got a negative rep point for that.

I've been involved in the conversation you're talking about. You brought but the concept of imaginary time and state that you take a philosophical standpoint, make no philosophical argument, ignore parts of posts you simply don't want to engage in and then trivialise the whole situation. I don't think you're that bad generally but what you did in that thread wasn't exactly bullet proof.

  17. I don't understand how any graduate of Philosophy can say that they don't work in their field. Philosophy superordinates all areas of study, and it directly superordinates Politics and Science.

This is ridiculous, so your saying that a phil grad can start working in designing rockets? Philosophy by itself is fairly weak. That's why major universities like Oxford make their students study maths and philosophy. Zenos paradoxes are prime examples of how lingual philosophy fails and you need maths to logically describe everyday processes in life. A considerable part of the history of philosophy contains mathematical thinkers like DesCarte, Whitehead, Russel, Frege, etc.

I wondered this when I started however, I now feel like there's barely enough time to get decent grades.

you're the guy who said relativity was wrong even though it works for satellites. It's amazing how many people don't know anything but think that everyone else is wrong.
