Is Teleportation Possible?

Teleportation is moving from a certain location to another without travelling through the intervening normal space.

 

Star Trek depicts teleportation as entering a transporter that uses a computer to scan poeple or objects atom by atom or molecule by molecule, then teleporting the atoms or molecules to a different location. This would be difficult to do by a computer because poeple or objects have an extremely large number of atoms or molecules.

 

An alternative would be to travel through the 5th dimension or higher, also known as hyperspace, possibly by using wormholes. I envision it as using a belt with a lighted buckle like the neural neutralizers worn by the Kelvins on Star Trek. This assumes that hyperspace exists or can be created, and that we can gain access to it.

 

If teleporatation were possible, it would make all other forms of transportation obsolete. The person or object would simply disappear from its current location and reappear in a different location. It might even make travel to different planets possible.

Even in SF I think this definition would typically be incorrect. Teleportation is normally seen as "beaming" the information to the destination, where the teleported object is reassembled, based on the information content of the "beam". This beam is a stream of photons, or tachyons, or some undefined particle, but there is a transport across space, not the instantaneous placement in the remote location.
