SFN Hits 400,000 Posts

Recommended Posts

Yesterday SFN passed 400,000 posts. We've effectively doubled our number of posts since September 2005. Our post rate is going up and we've got plenty of new members -- in fact, we recently passed 10,000 members.

I think this milestone is a cause for celebration. Good work, everyone, and let's hope we can double our postcount yet again in another three years. (Go exponential growth!)

This would be linear growth, if I'm checking your history correctly, not exponential growth. If it was exponential, then you would have to make 800,000 more posts over the next 3 years ;) (meaning your post count would have to be 1,200,000 in 2011, not 600,000).

If the number of (active) users increases linearly, and their individual posting rate is more or less constant, then the post count would increase as a rank 2 polynomial ([math]ax^2 + bx + c[/math]). A linear increase would actually be somewhat surprising, as the number of users can increase faster the more users there are, the higher on a search engine we are, etc.

However, too much growth has the potential to ruin the atmosphere, as it would be harder for members (or mods) to be personally acquainted with each other, a high search ranking could attract a different type of poster (trolls, people wanting free handouts on homework, etc). Or, maybe we could grow big enough to increase interest in science in the population at large. Don't really know.

I've actually always wondered if the number of active members stays relatively constant over long periods. Obviously the number of registered members increases, but most of those don't post more than a few times, and active members drop off periodically.

Don't worry, I'll be here, until, well, 2012 apparently.

I hope I won't stop posting (or as CDarwin said, not until 2012).

So, hope it keeps growing exponentially (or linearly)...

I liked SFN and I won't go away soon.

How many known sockpuppets are there registered on SFN? I'm pretty certain that this might inflate the number of actual people who have registered, though probably not by that much.

Probably around a hundred. revprez and atomikpsycho would make up most of those.
