another synth q

Featured Replies

I was wondering if i could Buy potassium Bisulfate or sodium bisulfate at like a hardware store and if i cant how could i synth it?

you should be able to buy the Sodium type at a Photography shop.

and you can easily do a displacement with the sodium to get potassium.

H2SO4+NaOH-->NaHSO4 only in a 1:1 ratio stoichiometrically. same works with KOH.

S+O2-->SO2

SO2+H2O2-->H2SO4

H2SO4+KOH-->KHSO4

^i wouldnt suggest the above just because the SO2 isnt friendly, or so i've found in my exposure to it. if you were to try this, i would suggest you try to keep the peroxide very cold, as dissolving the SO2 is an exothermic process and could cause the runaway decomp of the peroxide.

great i will try that/those

also, how could i burn sulfur and make so2, but still be able to buubble it through any liquid? Because i cant burn it in a flask, cause it will run out of air.

You could get a big beaker and use an oxygen tank from a hardware store. Connect the oxygen tank to one open tube going into the stoppered beaker, and have the other open tube going from the beaker into the peroxide solution. The oxygen won't dissolve to any great extent, but the formed SO2 will readily dissolve in the there. If you have a constant influx of oxygen from the oxygen tank, you'll be pretty sure that all of the formed sulfur dioxide is going where you want it to go.

it depends on what glassware you have. you could try a number of methods; if you have a strong fan, you could push air into your reaction vessel, but it could get tricky. make sure the fan is strong and you have a reasonable amount of space for the SO2 to diffuse out and into the solution.

If he wants to dig it up, he could probably use a similar setup to the one I used to generate chlorine gas which I've described in a few other threads. Instead of having the one inlet for the HCl, he'd have an inlet for the oxygen gas.

hmmm i see. Im probably gonna get a filter flask and connect that to a flask making O2, h2o2 plus MnO2.

not if u buy it at the storeand conc. it

it's cheaper at 35% by the liter. i can get a grand total of something like 22mL of 100% h2o2 for maybe $1.50 at a local drug store. of course, it's diluted to 3%. i got a liter of 35% for $17. not particularly cheap
