I am told that Sons are never shorter than their mothers and Daughters are never taller than their fathers. Is there any truth in that? I am not talking about people with growth problems etc.

Length is not determined just by genes. Nutrients are very important for somebody to reach his/her maximum length. There are plenty of women taller then their fathers.
