Ultimate Battery

Featured Replies

As once again the batteries fail for the digital camera I start to think about the future for batteries.

When it comes to current demanding products such as digital cameras they really are battery-eaters... and big eaters at that!

All leading battery producing companies are trying to invent a new, better, longer lasting battery, so far they've been able to pack a bit more in, but not enough... there is a big commercial industry awaiting the person who can come up with a battery that lasts 5 or 10 times as long as current ones do.

What are your thoughts on the future of batteries? How would one go about making such a better (yet needed) ultra-battery?

well they do exist: solar batteries are recharged on the move.

Then again! You may like to transport some uranium around with you...

i meant non-rechargeable standard size batteries ;)

Do you mean now or in the future?

We could have miniaturized fuel cells.

Or in 500 years: antimatter batteries!

i mean now developing for the near future... like me designing the battery of tomorrow, if you see what i mean. something realistic that could be in production within 10 years or sumin.

in the mean time, the next time you pass by a hospital, pop into the cardiac unit and ask them for their used batteries, they`re Durracell ProCell in AAA and AA size, each is only used once (by law) for a period of 24 hours in a monitor device that uses no more than your average pager.

they`ll sell them to you, I get 12 for a pound! and at the same time they use that money to buy other needed equipment, so you`re doing them a favor as well :)

they also last longer than the brand new durracels that you can buy from the shops!

that's really useful to know, thanks.

can you buy these batteries in normal shops for twice the price, or are they specialist things only?

I`ve never seen them in the shops myself, but it`s not something I shop for anymore either, so it`s possible? :)
