can you guys think of new , theoretical cameras to take pictures of the night sky instead of using the common high resolution cameras?

I have always fancied the idea of a cheap and cheerful astronomical interferometry array using mass produced parts to create an amateur price level but professional aperture-equivalent device. Those that know better have told me it is unworkable - and I don't know enough to argue, and living in London there is not enough un-polluted sky for the idea to be worth trying.
