Really elementary question

Featured Replies

Hi,

For a number like 45 915, are both ways of writing that number below in words correct? Is there a more standard way?

Forty-five thousand, nine hundred and fifteen.

Forty-five thousand and nine hundred and fifteen.

Thanks in advance and sorry for asking such a basic question here :embarass:

I don't think that Forty-five thousand and nine hundred and fifteen is the proper way to say it. To many and's. As for the other one I think that's right.

I see. Thank you so much, Auk :)

using the "AND" can imply addition in some cases too.

lose the "And" :)

No problem. :D

Yeah, losing some "and"s is quite clarifying in most cases. You lose the "and then and then and then" kind of feel, which isn't necessarily what you want. However, there are cases where the "and" is most necessary. For example, such is the case with writing the word "fanduck".

i would pressonally go for the first one. thats how i write the amount if i have to write a cheque.

I've also seen "and" used to express the location of the decimal point, bringing us to "forty-five thousand nine-hundred fifteen."
