Calcium Carbide and Calcium Chloride

Featured Replies

What is the difference betweem Calcium Carbide and Calcium Chloride?

There's a whole lot of difference. In both compounds though, there is a Ca+2 ion that has the other atoms around it. In calcium chloride, there are two chlorine atoms. In calcium carbide, there are two carbon atoms that are bound to each other in a triple bond.

Calcium carbibe is also extremely reactive, addding water to CaC2 will give ethyne (this is how the first street lights worked) where as adding water to CaCl2 will just cause it to dissolve.

calcium carbide is also known as "bangsite"

acetylene oxidizes quite easily, which makes it so reactive...calcium chloride is quite stable
