123+456=579, not 512. Are you talking about binary? If so, take the two numbers and do: -

123 + 456 in base 7 will yield 613 and in base 8, 602. You've given 2 versions of the question, are these correct?

If you change it to 123 + 456 =612 (and not 512 as in the original post) then base = 7

In base 7 answer is 612 not 613

In base 8 answer is 601 not 602

So it is, forgot to take the 0 into account - oh well, more than ten years since I've done any of this!
