I believe speculation is just guessing.

 

Depends on what is really meant by a speculation.

 

One can use existing theory and/or observations to make intelligent, thought out and well stated conjectures and speculations. It is a step into the unknown rather than just making thing up as you go.

 

This is very different to just "pulling things out of thin air", which seems to plague this forum.

It's on wisdom, I think.

To examine and think and make a wise decision on other things you have examined.
