But the thyroid regulates hormone release.

The pancreas is an endocrine gland, it releases hormones such as insulin Glucagon (which is effectively the opposite of insulin) and another which regulates growth hormone, I forget it's name now but it's not relevant to your question anyways.

 

Diabetes as already explained is insulin dependant
