Contradiction?

Featured Replies

Is the phrase "accelerating the speed" (of something) a contradiction?

Thanks

I do not think it is a contradiction, but is bad semantics. We all know what is meant by that statement, but it is very loose in terminology.

"Increasing the speed" is what is meant and the rate of that increase is the (magnitude of) acceleration.

i suppose it could reffer to jerk as well.

as in increasing the rate of increase of speed.

just someone being careless with language, not a contradiction in its self.

Thanks. I'll have to advise the BBC of their careless use of the English language :eyebrow:
