In a nutshell BIND stands for Berkley Internet Name Daemon. It is an open source implementation of the server portion of the DNS (Directory Name Service) protocol. This implementation is considered somewhat canonical although the Internet RFC's are the official definition.

 

DNS is responsible for resolving names like http://www.google.com into Internet addresses and resolving things like mail exchanges, etc.

I've used BIND before. It's very powerful and flexible. The downside to it is its complexity (took me like 3 hours of reading through the man. pages and tinkering to get it to do what I wanted).

Yeah, it's more complex than most people need, and the zone files are fun, but apart from that it's a nice bit of software and one of the most reliable you're likely to come across.
