Weird rain?

I have a question for the meterologists:

Yesterday afternoon (in West Virginia USA), we had the strangest rain and I do not understand how it occurred.

There were only wispy cirrus clouds in an otherwise clear and blue sky. The sun was shining quite nicely and the temperature was in the upper 70s.

We had four separate occurrences of rain falling straight down, three were very heavy falls and lasted about 1/2 hour each, and the fourth was lighter and lasted about 10 minutes.

The raindrops looked quite flakey and there was almost no sound of rain.

Anyone have any ideas what caused this?

Thanks.
