magnesium

Featured Replies

why magnesium shows +2 state why dont it settle for +1. energy for +2 is 5 times higher

because it is more stable when it is in the +2 oxidation state than the +1 state because it would then have a full shell on the outside. +1 states do exist but never for long(we're talking femtoseconds here).

That's because it has two electrons in the outer shell. Its his fundamental chemical characteristic, just like sodium +1, fluorine -1, potassium +1 etc!
