How do you make nitric acid HNO3 and KNO3? WITHOUT using oine to make the other (and no im not dropping potassium into nitric acid, mainly due to the fact I dont want to die yet). Using household materials, (purification of fertilizer?)

 

Im NOT a terrorist, just 14 and want to do some experiments in my back garden.

buy either Ammonium Nitrate or Nitrate of Soda (both sold as fertiliser).

displace the Sodium or Ammonium ions with a potassium salt (potassium, carbonate, hydroxide or chloride). pure white wood ash contains potassium carbonate and hydroxide as the soluable materials if you`re REALLY stuck for K containg salts

 

as for making Nitric acid, you`ll need Sulphuric acid to start with.

have a look on here for a thread called "how to make hydrochloric acid" or something similar, that has plenty of data

 

EDIT: may I ask why you want Nitric acid in particular?

well for a start, aspirin and KNO3 are indeed used, you don`t use HNO3 though?

it`s either one or the other, not both
