looking for chem. reaction between rock and something else

Featured Replies

I'm trying to think of a type of chemical reaction that involves a rock and some other substance. What kind of rocks are most susceptible to chemical reactions and with what substances do they typically react? Acids? Oxygen? What would be a relatively quick reaction?

The mineral Calcite reacts with Hydrochloric Acid by slowly dissolving it and producing carbon dioxide and water.

Lime rock ([ce]CaCO3[/ce]) would be fine! First you heat it and the results are as the following equation:

[ce] CaCO3 + Temp -> CaO + CO2 [/ce] but you must be careful to get all the [ce]CO2[/ce] out because the reaction is reversible so you might get [ce]CaCO3[/ce] again. When you have got CaO, just throw it on the water, the reaction that will take place is exothermic and you will get [ce]Ca(OH)2[/ce] dissolved in water!
