European Physical Society Conference

Recommended Posts

The 2007 EPS conference on particle physics is currently taking place at Manchester, and I thought a few of you might be interested.

The main website is:

http://www.hep.man.ac.uk/HEP2007/

and the scientific program can be found at:

http://agenda.hep.man.ac.uk/conferenceTimeTable.py?confId=70

Most of the talks are now online, so you can have a browse if you like.

I found this talk quite interesting:

the slides of one of the talks, which shall remain nameless, had an unfamiliar usage of the word "endure" (in UK can this mean "confirm"?)

With the discovery of a “Higgs-like” resonance at the LHC, we will have to endure that what we have found is the SM Higgs boson.

in US vernacular, endure means to "put up with" adverse circumstances.

Typo beats spellchecker, I guess. EDIT: As always, I'm not sure to what extend you (Martin) were serious or joking, so: The letters "s" and "d" are next to each other on a keyboard, that's why I'm guessing a typo - but of course I'm not a native english speaker, so I might have gotten it completely wrong.

I was thinking about going to this, in particular the "Non-Perturbative Field Theory, String Theory, Quantum Groups and Non-Commutative Geometry" sections, but there are no talks of direct interest to me, namely NGC or any more fundamental mathematical physics.

As such, I could not justify the registration fee. I was thinking about just turning up to some of the talks I was particularly interested in, but as I said not much is going on for me.
