microbial engineering? I didn't even know there were departments specifically for this. You may fair better if you search for biomedical engineering programs first. Then pick a supervisor that is catering towards the microbial engineering side of it.

At almost every school microbial engineering is likely to be a sub-discipline in biomedical engineering programs. This would likely explain your difficulty in finding a microbe-engineering department.
