Brewing Your Own Hard Cider

Featured Replies

Now i've read that if you stick yeast in apple juice and let it ferment it creates an alcoholic drink(not that tasty but works). I started doing this and im just wondering if it actually works.

It should work, but if you don't want yeast in the cider, you should figure out a way to separate them with a semi-permeable barrier. A cheesecloth might work. Also, you may want to think about favorable temperatures, etc.

Ya I was planning on just using a coffee filter and filtering it out a couple of times. I also heard from a friend that SOBE works very well if you want to turn it into hooch. I also put a balloon on top of the juice bottle and I can't believe how much CO2 is being released from the yeast.

if you like a flat cider (not fizzy) ypu can let it ferment out and the yeast will drop on its own also, you then syphon the cider off and bottle it.

or use isinglass if you want to speed it up.

Ferment it to flat, then bottle it with half a teaspoon or so (depending on bottle strength and bravery) of sugar. There are always enough random yeast cells remaining to gobble up that sugar and give a nice sparkle.
