Another Maths Question

Featured Replies

My friend came to my home for vacation. Every day we played a chess game.Where the looser should give the winner a choclate. Finally one day my friend gave me 8 choclates even though she won 12 games. How many days did she stay in my home?
is the answer 20 days??

sorry for such posts!! i am preparing for few exams and these questions are killing me because i make very silly mistakes in Maths.

kindly bear with me!! :D

Perhaps (read: probably), that's the smallest reasonable awnser so I guess it is probably the one that they are looking for.

What exams are you doing? The question is very poorly worded..

If you want to be pedantic about it (not a very good idea in these cases) then you might want to add on the amount of draws, of course that only works if your determining win by defeat: with chess you be defeated but still win by points and in this situation it is quite possible that in only twelve games the friend "won" both eight and twelve times.

I think I also able to solve this problem too.

Total 32 days she was with you(AND U WERE ONLY PLAYING CHESS.....)

She won 12 games but she gave 8 choclates means you won 20 games and she won 12.

Thus 20 - 12 = 8 which she gave to you.

See the problem here? Depending on the exam, it might be a good idea to put down all the solid awnsers you can think of, with examples.

Woah, this is an old thread to be digging up. Any reason for that?

I still don't like the ambiguity of this question.

  • 1 month later...

How is the answer 32? Keep in mind the question said "then one day she gave me 8 chocolates". That question is horribly worded and I don't see how she could have been there 30 days when he lost 12 games and then won 8. To me she was there 13 days since on only 1 day he got 8 chocolates. But then that contradicts what the question first stated about there was only one chess game per day.

How is the answer 32?
(it could be 32 because...)

In the end she gave him 8 chocolates, which means she must have won 8 less games than him. She won 12 and 12 is 8 less than 20. 20 plus 12 is 32.

That question is horribly worded
Yes it is, or more accurately it was, this thread is five months old.

Keep in mind the question said "then one day she gave me 8 chocolates". [...] and I don't see how she could have been there 30 days when he lost 12 games and then won 8.
It never says that she won 8, it says that she gave 8 chocolates.

To me she was there 13 days since on only 1 day he got 8 chocolates.

No it doesn't, keeping tabs is a very well established economic activity.

Now please don't drag up old threads unless you have good reason to rekindle discussion
